Success after IF

DS was diagnosed w/reflux today...

After a very scary moment at 3 am, I took him into the pediatrician first thing this morning and they diagnosed him with having reflux and prescribed Prevacid.  I'm glad I took him in, but part of me wonders if he really does have reflux.  I guess I'm confused about the symptoms.  He always spits up after eating (he is BF), but it's never projectile spitting up nor does it come out of his nose, etc.  Just this past week, he started arching his back and crying after eating when I try to burp him - never gets fussy while he's eating.  The spit up is has been kind of thick/mucousy.  I guess I always thought if he had reflux, I would have known sooner or he would have more of the projectile spitting, etc.  He has been congested since birth, which the NP said is common with reflux?  The reason I took him in was because he was choking/gagging on mucous/spit up this morning and it completely terrified me (I think it has scarred me for life).  I'm petrified to put him to bed tonight.  I don't know if I should put him back in his crib, if I should fit him into the bassinet (which he is getting too big for and can't really stretch out), if I should put him somewhere else to sleep... I don't know what to do.  And every time I think about him choking this morning, I start crying.  I felt so helpless.

  • I think I replied to you at like 5 this morning when Colin woke up. The symptoms you have described are the same that Colin had when he first began showing signs (about 1 week old) and when we tried a weekend off meds it was horrifying (7 weeks old). Maybe your son would have progressively gotten worse? Who knows. Skoorb has been so helpful to and supportive for me, her little guy has suffered with it for a long time now.

Technically they do have to do more tests and see a GI doctor to officially diagnose reflux, but it does sound like your son is showing the classic symptoms. There is also a reflux mom's check in on 0-6 mos that has been helpful.

  • A lot of those symptoms you described were present when DS was Dx'd with reflux.  Pick up the book, Colic Solved.  This was a lifesaver for us and is what I ultimately credit for getting him Dx'd with reflux.  DS had it severely enough that he wouldn't eat and had weight gain issues, the doctors never picked up on the reflux because he wasn't a huge spitter.  I digress....

Colic Solved is a really easy read and will give you lots of info and some tips.  I don't blame you for being concerned/scared to put him to bed.  Can you elevate his head while he sleeps?  A crib wedge or just some books under two legs of his crib?  This really helped us. and helped take some of my concern away.

Big hugs, I know it's hard.

  • Kiane, I'm so sorry your little man is dealing with reflux. His symptoms sound just like what Gaby had. I actually took her to an ENT because she was constantly congested and I thought there was something wrong with her sinuses but it turned out to be reflux. We have her sleep on a sleep positioned now which has helped. It elevates her slightly and she sleeps on her side which helps alleviate the congestion and makes me feel better about her not choking. Hang on there and e-mail me if you need anything.
