1st Trimester

To anyone who has had to get an HCG count done...

How long before you could get the results? I don't really want to wait until the 9th to verify that my #2 baby is as far along as I think... That's when my meet and greet with the nurse is, though. We didn't have this kind of bloodwork done with #1 for some reason, and only found out the proper EDD when I was 10weeks along by ultrasound. Hmm

I'd call my doctor office and ask, but they're closed on weekends except for emergencies, and I doubt this counts as one.

Re: To anyone who has had to get an HCG count done...

  • I got my results within a day or same day ...I had three done for this PGncy (I had a previous m/c) every other day and heard that day or early the next.  I don't think that it counts as an emergency unless you are having bleeding.

You can probably guess based on yoru last LMP.

  • An hcg count is not going to tell you how far along you are. Only an ultrasound will do that farther along.  Most doctors I know only do hcg counts if there is a risk or history of problems.

  • The only problem with going by LMP is that I'm not sure the 'period' I had really was one. Embarrassed I bled 6 weeks straight, stopped for a day and started again for a couple of days. We're counting that as my one and only, but could be wrong. Which is why I'm curious. :)

Huh, she told me that was what it was for, to figure out how far along I was. Dunno why she would tell me the wrong thing! Now I'm wondering what that was for, I hate bloodwork and if it wasn't needed... ugggggh. :(

  • I had one done when I m/c on a Monday afternoon, and had the results the following afternoon. It wont give you a true date of how far along you are, but by doing multiple draws they can tell that things are progressing as they should.
  • i see. that makes sense that it is confusing but the PP is right.  An u/s is the ONLY thing that can measure the baby.  HCG levels vary for everyone and they are not the be all, end all to measurement.

Ah... hm, I'm wondering if my doctor thinks something is wrong then. :(

  • I've had a couple done, but late in the day so I always had them by the next day.  I did have one on a Fri afternoon and needed to wait for Mon morning to call that was a rough weekend!

Also, they can give your doc an idea of how far along you are, but not an exact timeline.  I got this from americanpregnancy.org

    • 3 weeks LMP: 5 - 50 mIU/ml
    • 4 weeks LMP: 5 - 426 mIU/ml
    • 5 weeks LMP: 18 - 7,340 mIU/ml
    • 6 weeks LMP: 1,080 - 56,500 mIU/ml
    • 7 - 8 weeks LMP: 7, 650 - 229,000 mIU/ml
    • 9 - 12 weeks LMP: 25,700 - 288,000 mIU/ml
    • 13 - 16 weeks LMP: 13,300 - 254,000 mIU/ml
    • 17 - 24 weeks LMP: 4,060 - 165,400 mIU/ml
    • 25 - 40 weeks LMP: 3,640 - 117,000 mIU/ml
    • Non-pregnant females: <5.0 mIU/ml
    • Postmenopausal females: <9.5 mIU/ml

    Good luck!

  • It should give her an idea but there is no way to KNOW until they do an u/s.  I doubt there is anything wrong.  try not to worry.
  • My first beta I had my blood drawn around 9:00am and got my results the same day at 4:30pm. 48 hours later I had my second blood drawn at 9:30am and got the results back by 11:30am that same day. I guess it will all depend whether or not they have to send the blood out or if the have a lab in office.
