Good morning everyone! Just wanted to see if anyone is suffering from this? I'm only 4 weeks along and I've started with slight bleeding in the gums. I googled it, and of course now I'm terrified. They mention preterm labor, preeclampsia, and a variety of other lovely things. It's just one tiny area, and I regularely see a dentist and my teeth are usually very healthy.
Anyone else experience this? Should I worry or take it easy? TIA!
Re: Bleeding Gums
I was just at the dentist the other day for my 6 month cleaning, and they were actually surprised that I haven't had much gum bleeding. They said it's very, very common. I've only experienced it for a couple days.
Ok I feel a lot better then. Sometimes google really is the devil!
Thanks everyone!
I can help with this one! I'm a dentist! Due to all the pregnancy hormones, bleeding, red gums can be common during pregnancy. The important thing is to brush and floss well daily to prevent that. The bleeding doesn't have to happen if you care for your teeth really well. It's just the response to bacteria on the teeth during pregnancy is exacerbated by all the hormones.
That being said, bleeding gums alone will not lead to pre-term low birthweight children. Untreated periodontal disease has been linked to pre-term low birthweight though. See your dentist for your regular checkups and you should be fine!
