USPS to Deliver Mail Only 5 Days a Week?!

Re: USPS to Deliver Mail Only 5 Days a Week?!

  • That was on our news today: ( If it had to be, I wouldn't mind them dropping Saturday too much since it is not counted as a business day. Thus, we wouldn't have to worry about sneaking in packages past our DHs: )?

  • That sucks. I live for the mail, especially during the week while DH is working.
  • They haven't made any decisions about this yet, right? I mean, it's a great way to save govt money, but I have a feeling it'll mean more layoffs or reduced hours for a LOT of people who can't really afford lesser pay. I could care less if the mail only came 5 days or not, I'm just worried about more jobs lost.

I really wish this would all be over. How depressing.

  • I'm just thinking that even with the postage rates increases, they lost around 8 million last year.

    Oy.

And e-mail is partially to blame.  As is the lack of manners of people who don't send thank you notes for gifts and favors.  (Don't get me started on the "entitlement" issues our society has.

I don't see the layoffs or reduced pay so much, because postal employees are payed a "salary" of sorts.  (It's broken down by the hour, but they have rank, and rank is guaranteed set pay.)

They definitely can lay off and for many there would be a decrease in pay. A huge portion of postal carriers are on the overtime list and in many cases (dh included) rely on it. They work 5 day weeks with a rotating day off. Sometimes they'll work that rotating day off and get paid overtime and if they don't then there's a floater who bounces around from route to route covering those off days. If they cut to a 5 day work week the people who work those days frequently would take a huge cut in pay (dh). And the need for the floaters would be completely eliminated. In some cases they would have difficulty firing those people because of it being a government job and all but they'd have to find a place for them, most likely further cutting other employees hours.

In other cases these float positions are filled by transitional employees who are not considered career employees yet. These people are completely expendable and can be fired for any reason. They're sort of like temporary employees except that generally if you make it long enough without screwing up you usually will get your own route and become permanent. But in this situation they would probably all be let go. DH also heard that while he's a government union employee who basically has to kill someone on his route to get fired - technically they can let you go if you have less than 5 years in.

DH says he doubts this will fly. It's been asked for before and denied because basically no one (customer wise) would put up with it. Between credit card companies needing to get their bills out and in in a timely manner and more and more people relying on the mail for things like perscription drugs, it's going to be a really hard sell.

If it goes through though, it could be really bad for a lot of people. Our family included. If dh lost his overtime, I have no idea what we would do.

  • Eh. We don't even have mail delivery where I live, so it doesn't make a difference to me. Seems like kind of a dumb move to me though.
  • good point smurfette.  I know DH's shift differtial is very important to us.  And the construction zone over time are things we plan for economically.

  • So many companies have started doing online only bills. They call it a "Go green" campaign or something like that. I'm happy they're doing it, but you know it's got to save them a crapload in postage costs.?

Getting the mail is one of the little highlights of my day. Sometimes it's the only time I leave my house ?Embarrassed.?
