Houston Babies

Right Start is NOT closing...

...at least according to the mgr. I spoke w/ at length in person (@ The Village) today. She said that yes, some corporate people were laid off, and that they were the ones to send the e-mail rumors around that the entire business was closing down. Babystyle, which they own, is closing, however. Sounds to me like they were just trimming the fat at corporate since they were doing away with BS.

Nothing was on sale, and they are receiving regular shipments.

She was very adament that they weren't going anywhere, as I questioned her a good bit. Gift cards are being redeemed & sold as normal.

I actually went in expecting things to be heavily discounted and nothing at all was. (other than the little section of misc. discontinued things)

  • They told me not to expect anything to be on sale, but that they weren't getting new trucks of anything in until things were resolved.  She said they had a buyer, but it would take 7 to 10 days to get things worked out.  75% of corporate was laid off, doesn't seem like trimming the fat to me.  TinyRide and BabyStyle are both gone, which makes me so sad, I love BabyStyle.

The most annoying part is the online selection is jsut as bad as in store.  One of my friends has her baby shower next week and over half of her registry is unavailable.  Also, I had a product question last week before all this mess went down.  I emailed twice and got no response from them except the auto reply.

The manager specifically told me to use the GCs.  Last time they went through this mess with FAO, old GCs were not honored.

Then maybe the details have mostly been ironed out at this point, because she certainly gave info. quite the contrary to what you were told. I just hope they don't go anywhere...we enjoyed having our registry there back in the day.

Oh, and PAGAS, so I had to go to Bering's to look for a cookie cutter...and came out w/4 CUTE outfits (for now and next year)...and $125 poorer. All because of the $1.29 cookie cutter I needed! LOL The outfits are SO cute, though! I got a Deux Par Deux sweater dress, a BabyNay skirt & top outfit, a Girlfriends swing top (green w/ brown polka dots), and a gorgeous brown faux-silk party dress (which we have no ocassion for, as of yet...but for the price, I could NOT pass it up)! I also got 2 RL polo shirts for my nephews for $8 each! I love finding scores! All their clearance was 75% off...last time it was only 50%!

  • Kel - sounds like you made a great score at Berings!  You were missed at lunch today, haven't seen you in forever =)

I sure hope the buy went through and everything comes back into stock.  My friends shower is next week and it sucks that you cannot get so many things.  She had emailed RS before I told her about the issues and she never got a response =(

  • The store associate told me the same thing Tuesday.  Then--thinking I had left while I was looking at books--proceeded to complain to the manager about if and when she would be laid off and what everyone was supposed to do at this point.  They shut up real quick when they saw me.  I know they have to have a company line, but it annoyed me that it seemed like they were acting at the least a little shady about the whole thing.  I will be using all my gift cards as I don't trust anything they said to reassure me.
  • I really don't think that the store-level people will know before the general public. And if they did, I do not think the managers could be trusted to tell customers... mostly because screwing customers over on gift cards is a very popular strategy for dying companies.

But FWIW, they got a new CEO in December, one who has turned around a failing company before. So there's a strong possibility that it could be a shake-up rather than the beginning of the end.
