Rocker vs. Glider vs. Overstuffed

Chair for the nursery...

What do you have, do you use it? Do you like it? Do you wish for something different??

We have a small space and a very tight stairwell so we won't be getting anything very big. And we can't afford a fancy overstuffed/upholstered glider/rocker. It'll either be a compact old fashioned wood rocking chair, one of those wood gliders with padding (neither of which seem very comfortable to me) or a small, probably vintage/craigslist wing chair or overstuffed armchair.

How do I decide??

Re: Rocker vs. Glider vs. Overstuffed

  • I have a glider thingy that I have barely touched.  Addie has just never been a rocking type baby.  She wants you up and walking/bouncing with her.  So I say get something cheap and easy till you figure out if little man will be a rocker type baby.  The one thing I recommend is something with padded arm rests.  Babies get heavy when you are holding them for long periods of time in one position.

  • We got a used upholstered glider/ottoman from Craigs list it was about 200 or so. And DH and I both love it so much. We spend a lot of time in there. We rock with DS every night and on weekends. It is our wind down get ready for sleep place. I have even napped in it before. It is pretty big takes up a lot of space but I would be heart broken to give it up.

  • I have a wooden rocker that I got from freecycle. I painted it lime green to match her nursery, threw on a pillow from Ikea and it is perfect!

We brought it downstairs after dd got her shots and she was miserable, so I just sat and rocked her. Now, I can't keep ds out of it!

  • We have an upholstered glider and still use it several times a day.  I don't think the gliding is necessary, though, at least not for Evie.  Given your options, I'd probably go with an overstuffed chair.

  • Annette, that photo is darling.

Tammy, If you don't use your chair, where do you do night feedings??

  • I actually have a couch in Ben's room.   I LOVE IT.    It's the cute yellow couch I had in my condo before I met Steve.  I couldn't give it up.  So now it's in Ben's room.   It's soooo nice because all three of us can sit in there and read books, and I have slept on it many a night.. it's good b/c you can sleep sitting up sort of if your kid is snotty and needs his head elevated to sleep.  It's awesome.

I personaly hate the gliders.  They make me feel sea sick.

Whatever you get, make sure you think you could sleep in it. Seriously.

We had Addie in our room for the first month and would do them in bed....with the boppy.  Be sure to get/register for one of those...they are a life saver. Most of the night feedings we did on the couch.  (Our TV room is next to her bedroom.)  I like the lounger chair part on the couch to stretch my legs out in front of me.  However, she decided on her own to drop all her night feedings at about 8 weeks....so I guess that would be another reason we did not use the chair too much.  I hope to start using it again when we start reading to her more.  Right now she falls asleep before we get to reading a book.  HAHA

  • We bought a Glider and ottoman from craigslist in perfect condition for $70. It is super comfy and we use it a lot to read and rock her at night.
  • We just bought a big overstuffed rocker recliner. It is SO COMFY - DH and I already trade off who gets to sit in it. We put it in our bedroom for now, but will maybe move it to the nursery later. The advice we got was to make sure we had two big overstuffed arms and make sure its comfy enough to sleep in. When it reclines back, it basically feels like a bed. Man, I can't wait to get home to sit in that chair tonight!

  • I have a wonderful glider that I got from target for $150, Its awesome!  All the cushons come off so I can wash them (very handy for projective spit up) and its sooo comfy!  Honestly I have fallen asleep in that many a night.  Its also not huge so it doesn't take up the whole room!
