First birthday party theme

So I am thinking of Robbie's 1st birthday and looking at what "theme" to do.

I am thinking either Sports (baseball, football, basketball) or Bugs.

What do you think of this cake? It is too gross for a 1st birthday party?  Do you think a boys 1st birthday party should be more soft and baby like?

Re: First birthday party theme

  • Cute!  I was at the party store yesterday buying stuff for the Super Bowl (go Cardinals!) and looked around at the different baby birthday themes.  I have no idea what to do either!  I'm hoping by then, Mattie will have developed some kind of favorite toy or book or something that I could base the theme on.  I like the bug idea - I don't think you need to go with anything baby-ish.

  • I think its really fun and cute. I like that is something different. I am going with the all to popular monkey theme, but Blake loves monkeys and there is a lot of it out there right now :)
  • No, I don't think 1st bdays have to be babyish.  I do like when the theme is something personal to the child, ie. a character they like or something that they seem to show interest in.   I'm itching to start planning Mikayla's party but I want to wait until I'm able to tell more about what she likes before choosing.

The cake for me is a little much, but I hate bugs in general.  I would maybe make it more cartoonish, maybe do grass instead of dirt, and maybe "happy" bugs like bees and ladybugs?  Kind of like that movie "A Bug's Life"?

  • I love the bug idea too, but I agree with deb - maybe something a littler cute/happy. The dirt cake seems a little bit more appropriate for older kids.

You could buy a flat of wheat grass from the grocery, and tuck cupcakes decorated with bugs into it - that would be super cute. You could find some small toy flying bugs like bees and poke a wire into their belly and stick the other end in the grass, so it's like they're flying above the cupcakes. ?

  • If the Sports idea is still up for discussion, you could do Robbie's 1st Birthday 'Ball' and do everything with different types of sport balls (baseball, basketball, soccer ball etc.) You could do cupcakes and decorate them as the different balls, there are tons of balloons out there in the shapes, and for an activity, you could have a ball pit. There are tons of options!

  • Crazy that we are thinking about 1st b-days already - where did the time go?

I'm having cupcakes and then decorating them like a baseballs.  I got the big cupcake pan to make the smash cake.  I've also bought his b-day shirt which has a cupcake decorated like a baseball!  that's all I've done so far tho....

  • Oriental Trading has a TON of stuff for the sports theme 1st Birthday.  They also have a really cute dinosaur theme!
  • I think you should do whatever theme you want.  That cake is really cute!  I have already decided to a do a tonka truck theme party for Gavin's 1st birthday, and he's only 3 months old!  ;)
