Can you have a blighted ovum and still have a yolk sac?

Ladies - as I have posted before, my dates are way off...still growing, but nothing but a gestational sac and a yolk sac.  They think I am just over 5 weeks now, but 2 weeks ago I was 4 weeks.  Anywho, anyone have experience with blighted ovums and do you know if yolk sacs are present with this?  I know a gestational sac is, but am unsure about the yolk sac.Confused

Re: Can you have a blighted ovum and still have a yolk sac?

  • Usually you don't have a yolk sac with a blighted ovum.  You would only see an empty sac.  When are they doing another u/s?  You should see a little baby just after 5 weeks and a heartbeat at about 5weeks 4or 5 days.  If they are doing an u/s are they doing an internal or vaginal u/s?  They should because that is the most accurate at this point.  Good luck!

  • They do transvaginal ultrasounds on me.  I went 2 weeks ago and we saw only a gestational sac.  The u/s machine wouldn't give a date because I wasn't far enough along to read.  So my doc guessed I was 4 weeks 4 days.  I went back yesterday and we saw a yolk sac inside the gestational sac, but nothing in the yolk sac.  The machine said I was 5 weeks and 2 or 3 days(can't remember).  She said I had 2 weeks of growth so that was good, but I am going back in on Monday to have another u/s to check up on things.

  • I went when I was 5w5d and we saw a yolk sac.  I was very worried but my doctor told me it was fine.  I was just reading something on the American Pregnancy website and it said that you will usually see the fetal pole between 5 1/2 and 6 1/2 weeks and then a heartbeat after that.  https://www.americanpregnancy.org/pregnancycomplications/earlyfetaldevelopment.htm

I hope your dates are just off and you see more at your next ultrasound!  I think you said you have another one next week?  I have to wait until 2/13 and that seems like FOREVER!

    Keep us posted...

  • Yes, you can either have an empty sac or yolk sac.  A BO just means no fetal pole will ever form (no baby).  I have had 2 BO (with my last one being this past Friday) and my 1st BO had a yolk sac.  I was 8 weeks and 2 days when I finally had a D & E.  My sac kept growing so my hcg levels kept rising to over 11,000 (kept almost doubling but not quite) before I had my surgery.  I just had one US then waiting another week for another US to verify no baby ever formed.  I am sorry you are going through this!  I really sucks and is not fair.  GL to you.
  • I had one of these last year. The sac kept growing but there was no baby. Finally at 9 weeks, I had a D & C. Sad

It is probably hard for them to keep up with your dates since there is no baby. Have you had your hcg levels tested? They will tell you exactly what is going on. I was having mine done twice a week.

Things will be ok and get better though. I got pregnant again 4 months later and wa lah! Now we have a beautiful 4 month old. Smile

  • Well, I'm not ready to convince myself I have a blighted ovum just yet.  I am still holding on to every piece of hope I can get!  We weren't charting ovulation so we don't know when we conceived, and were just going by my LMP.  I still think I have lots of hope and am not thinking the worse.  The doc wasn't concerned, so I'm not going to be either!Wink
