Bed help please

My twins turned 3 today.  Now I want to put them in a toddler bed.  Problem is my "4-1" crib only converts to a daybed - meaning that the front of the crib comes off and that's it.  Is that ok?  It seems high to me even on the lowest level.  They also have toddler bed that match our furniture for $99 each.  Should we spend the $200 for toddler beds?

That's the problem.  It won't convert to anything other than a daybed or a full size bed.  So I have to pick one....toddler or daybed?

DH built a rail for the daybed so that it would be safer.  Otherwise I would have just put pillows on the ground.  The problem with the daybed thing is that you can't buy a commercial rail (or, not for any reasonable price).  The regular rails aren't safe.
