monitor for toddler's room

i'm trying to decide if i should get a second monitor when the new baby is here. we don't use it at night anymore with DD but it's nice to have occasionally - if she's napping or sleeping and it might be loud it allows me to close her door all the way (normally i leave it cracked) and feel comfortable that i'll hear her.

thinking perhaps with new baby i should start closing her door all the time so the baby crying doesn't wake her. so if i do, do i have her keep hers (an angelcare but the older model) and buy the new angelcare for baby (my friend has it and the parent units are smaller and better), or buy a video monitor for DD so i can spy on her and see if she's really asleep in her big girl bed, or just the cheapest one i can find that i think will work okay.

Re: monitor for toddler's room

  • I didn't buy a new one because DD2 sleeps in my room.  DD1 is still in her crib, and there's a monitor in her room.

I think if I had them in two rooms, I'd just buy a used one for DD1's room and use the one I have for DD2.

  • We keep a monitor on DD.  She's almost 3 and although she's in a big bed, she doesn't get out of it by herself, she just calls for us.

I didn't want her yelling for me, so I taught her that she can talk into the monitor so I can hear her so now she says, "I'd like to get up now, please!!"

I've never felt like I need a video monitor, though.  Long story short, I like keeping a monitor on an older toddler, but I think the exact type is just a matter of personal preference.

  • We have a video monitor for DS. When he moves to his big boy room, we will get a second camera to put in his room so we can watch him and Baby #2 on one screen.

If you currently don't have a video monitor for your DD, then I would suggest just buying a cheap, used one that isn't fancy.

  • We no longer use a monitor.  DD is in a twin bed, and she gets out of bed when she wakes up from her nap and comes downstairs.
