I had a spinal for my c-section but haven't ever been completely out... I'd love some reassurance from others about the process. ?Did you wake up ok, and feel alright? ?I wasn't worried until my one-of-a-kind MIL started going on about how she responds horribly to anesthesia and avoids going under at all costs. ?Anyway, I'm sure it will all go fine but I'd love to hear from others who have gone through this. ?TIA.
Re: D&C tomorrow - anesthesia question
With a regular D & C or even a D & E you are given "light sedation" so you don't hear or see anything but they wake you up literally right after your procedure. I had that with my 1st surgery and literally was up about 15 min after being wheeled back and all was fine. Did you ever have your wisdom teeth out that is the same anesthesia they use.
With my 2nd D & E on Friday I had to be intubated because I ate freaking toast in the morning because it was a very quickly scheduled surgery so with intubation (hose down throat in case I threw up and aspirated) I had to be put totally under and didn't wake up for about 50 minutes after surgery. I had no problems with that anesthesia at all either.
Best of luck with everything I am sure you will do fine!
I had to have full sedation for my procedure (tube removal, not D&C) and the worst part was waking up thirsty and nauseated once I tried to get up to get dressed. I couldn't drink or eat anything after midnight and my procedure was at noon. They did put a tube in my throat, but not full intubation so the very back of my throat felt funny for a few days.
Overall it wasn't too bad. I think the best part was that the operating room was freezing, but I started to warm up as soon as he gave me the drugs and then fell asleep.
My Chart My Nest Bio
My first D&C was in the office- no anesthesia.
My second D&C was in the OR with full anesthesia. Light sedation (also known as twilight anesthesia) was mentioned but everyone recommended the full sedation. I'm glad I had it - they had trouble dilating my cervix enough (maybe because I was 15 weeks) and the procedure took longer than expected. I woke up while being wheeled out of the OR but I only have hazy memories of that. I really woke up in the PACU and felt fine except that I was nauseated. I did throw up and they gave me phenergen, which took care of the nausea.
I don't think anesthesia is anything to be afraid of. There are very rare people who react badly to it (maybe your MIL is one?) but the great majority of people do fine, and so will you. Good luck, and I'm sorry for your loss.
Sorry for your loss. I've had 2 D&E's, and I think I had two types of anesthesia (one twilight and one full-under)- both were very easy. They inject something great into your IV before you are wheeled into the OR and by the time I got there, I could have cared less what they were doing to me- I felt like I was drunk (in a good way!) I am claustrophobic and once I got into the OR they just laid the mask next to me and I took a few breaths and I don't remember anything else! One time I woke up in the OR after the procedure, and the other time in recovery. I felt great after both D&E's, just woke up and relaxed, then went to the secondary recovery room in a recliner, where they brought DH in and gave me coke and crackers. I changed, and we went home. I was there maybe 3 -3.5 hrs total (including pre-op and waiting to be called in). It sucks b.c you know why you are there, but the procedure is very easy. I felt physically fine as soon as I woke up. Had some cramping (like a period) a few days after but nothing major. And this is coming from someone who is TERRIFIED of hospitals/anesthesia etc!!
