Right now, Baby A is breech and Baby B is transverse- apparently my boys are not interested in the typical head down position as they have not been head down at any of the u/s I have had. So, my OB and peri are pretty set on my having a c-section, which is pretty much what I had guessed all along since I have some other risk factors to consider.
So, I am thinking that since they know I won't deliver vaginally, will they actually let me go into labor, or will I know ahead of time? My OB says that the hospital won't schedule a section before 38 weeks, and we both know that it will be a miracle if I go that far. I am wondering if I will go to an appt, u/s or NST, something will be 'off' and they will say, "let's do it tomorrow" or something. Even one day notice would be a big help for arranging care for DD. Has anyone talked to their docs about this? Or, if you have already delivered, what was your experience? I know, I am trying to predict the future, but I hate the idea of being unprepared when it comes to DD! TIA!
Re: what was your experience with labor? (long)
i thought my c-section was going to be scheduled because my girls were doing the same thing-- A head down, B breech entire time. but the girls had other plans. my water broke & i went into labor & they were born all within a matter of hours. i did have a c-section.
my advice would be to set up a couple of plans that could work just in case you do end up having them unexpectedly.
My boys were head down so we were planning a vaginal delivery and my ob said from the get go that we'd schedule something around 38 weeks if I didn't go on my own.
I started unexplained spotting around 36 weeks and I was in to see her a couple times that week. I had a dr's appt on a Monday am @ 8:30am - I was still spotting and contracting (which I had been for months of bedrest). She was on call that night and said, you want to be induced tonight? Um, yeah, um, no... um...I really wanted her to deliver me so I was induced at 36w5d. I ended up w/ emergency c/s early Tuesday am due to bleeding but alls well that ends well.
Those boys still may turn for you...
My experience is that it may be last minute. I had triplets and knew that I was having a c-section. It was scheduled for Monday, the 16th. At my last appt on Tuesday, the 10th, I was told that due to scheduling changes, I would be delivering on either that Thursday or Friday. They called me the next day, Wednesday, and told me to be in the next morning.
You never really know!
I had a scheduled section for 38 weeks but could have probably easily gone to 39, and my OB would have been ok with that if we wanted to. You may actually not go into labor before 38 weeks! You most likely will get some NSTs though. And yes, be prepared for things to happen sooner. I know its not easy to not know, but look at it this way, you wouldn't know with a typical vaginal birth either! And in the end, its better for them to stay in there a bit longer if they aren't in any danger.
I am in a similar situation with having to line up care for another child. I have my mom and SIL both 'on call' if something should happen and I need someone to get me to the hospital (while DH is at work) and someone to watch DS (regardless). Is there any family/friends/neighbors that could be your 'on call' person for DD if you go into labor before your EDD or c/s date?
Both of my babies are breech, we have schedule the c/s for 2/10...I will be 37w4d. But there is nothing stopping my body from going into labor before then. We already set up that he will sleep over my bro and SIL's house the night before the c/s and they are going to get him to school and my mom will get him after.
We do have family and friends around, but they all work, have kids, etc, so while several people could be here to take care of DD within anhour and half to two hours, I don't really have anyone who could just drop everything and be at my house in 10 minutes. Thanks to everyone for sharing their stories- I hope everything will go smoothly somehow!
