2 week old won't sleep on back

Our DC is nearly 2 weeks old and will sleep on her tummy while we hold her and on her side (she moves that way on her own) next to me on the couch but she wakes up mad if we put her on her back in the bassinet.  We think she has some gas and we're working through that with new bottles and drops.

I'm wondering if it's normal for a newborn to not want to sleep on their back?  What other options do we have to stay safe and not end up with an over-tired baby?

TIA!

  • I encourage you to give your pediatrician a call about this rather than listening to responses on the bump.

  • good question. My 1 week old also hates her back. She always rolls on her side...even when she's swaddled

  • Our LO has always rolled to his side.  We've just let him sleep on his side - he didn't start rolling to his belly until recently (and he hates being on his belly anyway).   He was always able to roll back onto his back from his side, so ...
  • DS always rolled to his side for the first 3 weeks or so.  Our pedi said as long we weren't laying him on his side and he was doing it naturally, it was fine.  We always just left him on his side and made sure his partial swaddle wasn't near his face (DS would only be swaddled with arms out).  After about 3 weeks, he just stopped sleeping on his side for some reason and now mainly sleeps on his back.
  • No advice...but just wanted to say our DS does the same thing. ?During the day, when I can watch him the whole time, I've put him in the bouncy seat or swing when he dozes off some. ?He seems to like it okay. ?DH seems to think it's because his head is a little elevated...that he just doesn't like laying flat on his back. ?Thinking about getting one of those positioners that raises his head some. ?I just have the flat one with the wedges now.
