Regarding your cupcake theme post since I'm late in responding...I'm also having a cupcake theme for DS and I bought the giant cupcake pan too (I got it at Target).  I'm going to use the giant cupcake as the smash cake and my thought is to decorate it like a baseball and then do normal cupcakes for everyone else.

I love your bib idea!  That's super cute!

  • right on! When is ds's bday? I can't wait to see how it goes! That was my idea as well...just use it as a gigantic smash cake! (and partly b/c I would have no idea how to cut and serve something so oddly shaped!)

so I was going to just give the big one to Norah and then make cute and girly reg. sized cupcakes and put them on this stand (see below) that we used for Jacobs 1st bday....

Good luck in your attempt...I am already intimidated!

  • DS b-day is 05/14!  I found a shirt at BRUS yesterday that says first bday and has a cupcake decorated like a baseball - but I didn't get it so I'll probably be heading over there once he wakes up from his nap!

I love the cupcake tier - I need to get one of those- where did you get it?

I was thinking of having alternating tier with light blue cupcakes and baseball decorated cupcakes.

It is crazy that I'm thinking of making a test big cupcake already?  :)

  • no, you're not crazy at all! I have definatley thought about making at least one in advance, to practice on. did you read all the posts on the previous thread? It was advised to use a dense cake (like a pound cake) to get better results...keep in touch b/c Norahs bday is in July so we're right behind you!
I got that cupcake stand at Joanns! You can always get a 40-50% off coupon in the Sunday paper, or if you're on their mailing list, you can get one every 2 weeks! Even though they didnt have it in stock, I was still able to use my coupon to special order it. Its been a great investment, I've had friends borrow it and I use it all the time!

  • I did read that  - and since I've never made a pound cake I'm totally all over the practice round.

Thanks for the tip on the stand I'm going to keep my eye out for it!

I picked up a cupcake book at Costco and was toying with actually stacking the cupcakes on top of each other to look like a cake but I think that may just end up too messy in the end - but it looks soooo cute.  UGH!

I may attempt your bib idea - but the problem I have is finding plain colored bibs anywhere.  (Of course I'd also have to have DH find my sewing machine in the garage - he wouldn't be happy about that project!)

  • no need to find a plain colored bib! You just go to Joanns and get some chenielle (you only need a little) enough for the width of the bib. and then you trace a bib pattern over it...cut it out and back it with a cute calico or solid. You could even do a sports theme backing...you can get a snap kit at Joanns for cheap too! Thats all Im doing...the problem for me, will be finding the cute fabrics that match our cupcake theme!

  • I hadn't even thought of that- hmmm...I maybe having to make a practice bib as well!  Thanks for the tips!  Your are right fabric could be challenging - I should start looking now!  :)
