Re: cool or warm mist to help with croup???

  • Warm mist like in a steamed up bathroom.
  • Cool - but taking DS outside helps much more than the humidifer

  • Cold- like standing in front of an open freezer or going outside briefly.?

  • oh no! not a warm mist humidifier but a steamed up hot bathroom. or--go for a walk in the cold air or put DD in front of the freezer.

hope she's better soon! ?we went through that with S and we felt so helpless.?

  • Sorry I reread...Yes, cool humidifier.  We have a Holmes brand.
  • We have the Crane one that looks like a frog from BRU. ?Has worked great for us so far...
  • definitely cool BUT the trick with croup when they are having a coughing fit is rapid temp changes. In other words, steam them in the bathroom for 10-15 minutes then wrap them up and take them outside for 10 minutes. it helps tremendously--not sure how but it does. If the temp where you are is not cool enough to go outside then stand in front of the freezer. Hope that helps and your dc feels better.
  • Cool mist.  I just bought a Vicks cool mist humidifier that I really like.  There are no filters to change and you can adjust the amount of humidity released.  It also has a spot to put a Vapor Pad to get the menthol in the room.

Both Alexander and Christopher are dealing with croup right now and I have it in the center of their room.  It may not be doing much for the actual croup, but I think it is making things a little more comfortable for them to sleep at night.

ETA:  Also wanted to add that generally speaking, warm mist humidifiers are almost never a good idea.  They are the optimal thing to harbor and grow mold, mildew, fungi, etc....all of those things thirive in moist warm areas which is precisely what a warm mist humidifier produces.
