I wouldn't say I'm a "cheap" person but I popped into our local Stride Rite yesterday and was blown away. Holy hell, $50 for a pair of infant shoes? Really? Um, no thanks.
DD isn't wearing shoes yet so I just wanted to "see" how much they were. Daaaaaamn! That's a lot of money to spend on shoes she will outgrow in a matter of months.
Re: Is Stride Rite for real?
LOL! Loving his $5.99 TJMaxx sneaks.

All of DD's shoes come from Target. Circo brand. I don't think I've ever spent more than $10 on her shoes and I can't even imagine paying $30-50 for Stride Rites.
DH went to school w/ a woman who works for Stride Rite. (corp. headquarters are here in MA) She was able to get us a 50% discount, but some of the shoes were STILL $25!
Very pricey, imho. Even their sales are super great.
My mom bought ds a pair of the prewalkers this weekend. They're so cute and seem really flexible for him. Even with my coupon though they where $37. Ouch.
My advice, get dc measured at stride rite and then buy them on ebay.
Uhmm.. no. It's not like I'm tying palm leaves to my kids foot with leather straps if I put him in something less expensive.
Ditto!
We just bought DS his first pair of shoes this weekend from Stride Rite, they were $40. Yes, it's expensive, but they are the correct type for his stage, soft soled, etc...And he's a 4.5 wide, which I couldn't find in any other store, we looked for a cheaper alternative at Target. IMO it was worth it to spend a little bit more for a quality shoe.
lol, I must be a terrible mom for not buying Stride Rites! My poor Jude's feetsies!
That's true. When they are first learning to walk being barefoot (or as close to it as possible) is best. Once they are walking more consistantly, you want to make sure that you're putting them in shoes that are still flexible and have good ankle support.
I have a full-time walker and seriously, expensive doesn't always = great. I don't think anyone should feel bad if they refuse to justify spending anywhere close to FIFTY DOLLARS on a pair of baby shoes.
oops edited to add : Jude has a few pair of supportive shoes we have found for under $20!
I never said that expensive = great. All I said is that the shoes need to have 2 qualities (flexible and provide ankle support). If you can find that in a $5 pair of shoes, then that's fine. Personally, I like DD's Stride Rites. But, I highly doubt I would have bought them if I was not able to get them for 1/2 price at the outlet.
DD is also a full-time walker and has been for almost 6 months.
I hear Jesus wore stride rites.
I am. for $50 those shoes had better get up for night feedings.
Actually palm leaves with leather straps would be better than some of the cheap shoes they have for kids. At this age you want something flexible that moves with the foot.
I grew up on Stride Rites, but for the life of me, I don't recall thinking of them as the "really good" shoes. They were pretty average sneaks. Maybe they were just kidding...
The stride rite by me had a awesome sale going on their clearance shoes the other day. They were three for thirty, but I think it was a one day thing to just get rid of the fall line to make room for the Spring stuff!
Holy crap! My babysitter totally bought DS a $50 pair (among a boat load of other stuff) for Christmas. I had no idea they were so expensive, but I just checked the website.
That will be the only pair he EVER gets!
