I am high risk so I have been having them since 14 weeks. I think in a normal pregnancy they start around the end of the 2nd tri. They are not that bad and pretty quick. It is neat to see what your cervix looks like.
I think they started checking me at 36 weeks last time. I might hold off until later this time around if everything is normal- they are not fun! Plus, i was dilated to a 3 for 4 weeks so I don't think they really determine anything either.

Whoa, hold up. You SEE your cervix? You must have an u/s. I thought the regular cervical checks were more, ahem, manual.
I misunderstood what she was saying. I think she is refering to internals, which are different than the cervical checks that I was talking about. Oops!
I am high risk and I have been having cervical checks since 17 wks. A dr. may do an internal to check your cervix. My dr. actually told me she does not like to do a "manual" check of your cervix on a regular basis. An internal can give your dr. information as to the length of your cervix, etc.
