3rd Trimester

Are you pumping and dumping?

Or what are you doing to have a drink after the baby is here? I swear I'm not an alcoholic but mama deserves a drink after all that pushing.  I just think once he's here I will find it too much trouble and too sad to dump all that lovely pumped breast milk.  I'm kind of depressed though knowing I won't be able to drink even after he's born lol.

Re: Are you pumping and dumping?

  • I was told to just not drink a lot, then you won't have to dump.  I was never an alcoholic, but I have been accused of having a moderation problem in the past, we'll see what I have to do.  My husband is the main non-drinker, I wish he could breastfeed.

  • Only once did I pump and dump with my first - that was the only time I was drunk while I was nursing M. My OB said that unless you were really buzzed or drunk, there is no need to dump the milk - especially not from one or two drinks.

  • My sister told me the same thing. Esp if you time it right from the last time you fed/pumped that you should be fine. No need to waste it.
  • I think that unless you are all out DRUNK, you can still breast feed and not pump and dump.?
  • What you do is feed the baby and then have a drink.  I will probably wait until a couple weeks to see how long it takes the baby to get hungry again.  If it is three hours like my DD#2 was at her night feeding then I would go ahead and have a glass of wine or a beer or margarita (I just like naming all my drinks at this point.)  You can work it out unless you get out of hand, you wouldn't have to pump and dump.  Just time it right.  I can't believe it is getting so close that I will actually be able to drink again!  Woohoo!

  • Beer and wine (not to super excess) are fine from what I learned in our BFing class last time.  The one to worry about was hard alcohol.

The yeast in beer can actually help milk production, so I may start having a beer with dinner every night!

  • You can have some alcohol without having to dump. It's been a long time since I had a drink, and I will probably not have the energy to bother with it for awhile after baby arrives. I'm thinking our anniversary in April will probably be the first time I have a drink.
  • I have never been much of a drinker, so I'm not too worried about it.  Plus, if my supply is like it was with DD, I will have so much on reserve, it won't be an issue.

  • alcohol works itself out of breastmilk the same way it works itself out of your blood, and you don't need leeches on you after you drink.  The key is to let enough time pass.

  • You'll be fine if you have a drink or 2 well before you'll want to feed your little one. In the beginning, when the baby won't be on a schedule, if I want to have a drink, I will. No dumping for me. I'll just be smart about it and not have a drink when I haven't fed the baby within the hour. I'd probbaly have it as soon as the baby is done eating if I wanted one since chances of feeding the baby in the next hour is slim.

When I go to a wedding, I will just pump enough to get her through the night (she'll be 4 months at this point) and pump and dump the rest after the reception.

  • Thanks ladies! Obviously I should have went to my breastfeeding class lol!
