diaper rash that looks like a chemical burn

WTF???  DD has this for the 2nd time.  Her poor tush!  I really don't know what is causing it.  We have tried every diaper under the sun, and are currently trying cloth but it is not going away!   We have tried tripple paste and buttpaste, neither one seems to be making a difference.  Last time it went away on its own after 4 days.  She was at the dr. 2 days ago, pedi saw it but didn't say it was a problem...anyone else experience this?

Re: diaper rash that looks like a chemical burn

  • If you're using cloth, how long have you been using them? Sometimes there can be buildup in the diapers, causing an excess of ammonia and that can burn. If you have been using them for a while, especially with butt cream without a liner, I'd say strip them and see if that makes any difference.

Fwiw, DS has had this kind of a rash before, and stripping diapers/using disposables and tons of cream did nothing. Just tons of naked time!

  • If you're using cloth, try switching detergents. Also try another cream, I use the Aveeno cream with a fleece liner when DD gets a rash. I hope you find something that works, how frustrating for you and DD!
  • This may sound strange but when JD had a horrible diaper rash the pedi's nurse told me to slather the area with Maalox at every diaper change. I just used a cotton ball to apply it and it was gone in a day.....

  • We are only on day 4 of cding so I don't think build up is the culprit.  I "think" it might be from the huggies they use at day care b/c the 2 times this has happened it starts after she goes to daycare on wednesday...

We use the Aveeno cream on DD as well, although we don't use a liner.  She's also had a similar rash over the last few days, and naked time is the key.

I agree, though, that stripping the CDs couldn't hurt.  Just make sure to rinse thoroughly.  What type of detergent are you using?

Do you provide the dipes, or does day care provide them?  I might consider trying something chemical free, like 7th Generation, to see if that helps.  Our day care won't allow CDs either.

Hmm...this sounds logical I am assuming this is b/c Maalox is an antacid so it would also control the acid in the diaper area.  But right now her bum looks so raw, almost like an open would, any reason to think this would not be good on such a rash?

Sorry about the dup post above...not sure how that happened

Yes, we will be giving daycare the earths best dipes we switched to at home before trying cloth.  I wanted to use up the huggies we had there 1st, tho....now I feel bad about that decision =(

His was so bad that he had a couple of spots that were actually bleeding a little! That's why I called the pedi.... and it came on in a matter of hours! In our case, we traveled to  DH's parents for a visit and MIL bought Huggies wipes instead of Pampers....it was the Huggies wipes that were causing it.

  • DD gets this sometimes really bad too.  I have found that letting her buns air out throughout the day helps.  I put her on a waterproof mat somewhere warm and let her just kick her legs.  And then I pack and I mean pack on original Desitin.  And most of the time when I pack it on before bed, it is almost completely cleared by morning.  No other creams have helped.  I have tried Desitin creamy, Balmex, A&D, Buttpaste, Arbonne, Aveeno.
