Really dumb question....

I was reading the preschool post below. ?Is preschool required in order for a child to go to kindergarden, or is it just strongly recommended?

We're looking to have #3 when DS is 4 and DD is 3. ?My mom watches the kids and I don't know how it'd be possible for her to take DS to preschool a few times a week. ?She's need a new car, etc. ?I can't picture this in my head. ?Thoughts?

Re: Really dumb question....

  • I know it's not required in AZ and I really don't think it is anywhere else, either.

  • It isn't required. ?It is just a nice way for SAH kids to start spending a little time away from mom. ?

  • Its not require in Wisconsin either. Our school district offers a "free" K4 program, but most of the surrounding schools do not. I know plenty of kids that went straight to Kindergarten and do fine.

  • Not required anywhere in the US
  • Not required in Michigan and neither is Kindergarden.  The problem is if children are not exposed to having to deal with kids their own age they might have a problem when they do start.  They need to learn taking turns, sitting in their seat, taking direction from someone other than their caregiver, a lot of group participation.  Many school now also require the kids to know certain things (colors, numbers, letters, name and how to write it, address, how to tie their shoes, zip their coat, etc).  If your mom can do that then your DC's would be fine.  Kids that do not get pre-school sometimes have to take extra time to "adjust" to a "school" setting and it just takes time away from them learning something else.  I guess I'm trying to say the transition might be a bit harder for them.
