Vicks VapoSteam Question???

We just bought a kick-ass germ-free warm mist humidifier last week (can you tell I'm in love with it??). 

DS started coughing a good amount this afternoon, so we bought Vick VapoSteam to put in the little "medicine cup" in the top.  On the bottle, it says to put it DIRECTLY into the water for it to work.  On the directions for the humidifier, it says to only put it into the cup, and NOT into the water directly.

I added it to the cap around 7, and when DS went to sleep at 8, I smelled NOTHING.  Nada.  Not even a LITTLE tiny put of mentholy-like aroma.

Did I do it wrong?  Poor guy keeps coughing and I was hoping that this would really help him!

We have the cheap Vicks one, but we put the vaporsteam in the little cup, not in the water.

I hope he feels better.  My Jonathan has a horrid cough as well.

I put it in the little cup on the unit. Not in the water. I can always smell when I walk into his room.
