Ladies who tore...come in!!

I only have a second degree tear, however, I am friggin miserable!!  I can't walk, sit down, stand up, lay down, or roll over without a lot of pain.  (I know I'm a whinerHuh?)

So if you tore, how long was it before you could move around again semi normally??    What were some things that made you feel better??

Thanks ladies!

Re: Ladies who tore...come in!!

  • Granted...last time I birthed was 3 and 1/2 y/o ago (and it seems like FOREVER) ?and I tore much worse w/ Logan (so 5 1/2 yrs ago) but ot seemed like every day it got a little better. I remember with Logan my IL came like 3 weeks after her was born and I felt fine. Something to look forward to...2nd time around...much less painful, at least in my experience. I remember resting and taking it easy made my day much better. That and one of those donuts, a peri bottle, and Motrin. Don't forget to take the Motrin.

  • sitz baths, peri bottle, ibuprofin, not sitting on hard surfaces (e.g. wooden chair) without a cushion, frozen tucks pads

it was easily a few weeks until i was more comfortable, but then again i never took anything more than ibuprofin after delivery.

  • I had a 1.5 degree tear (don't ask me how his 10+ pounds came out of there without tearing me to Tuesday, but).  The thing that helped me the most was that I sat on my boppy.  That was the only real use I was able to get out of it, but man was it a life saver.

TTC #2 for a million years: SA normal, CD 23 bloodwork shows nothing amiss, ovulation detected. Next step: ? maybe CD3 bloodwork to check eggs? All out of pocket, so limited IF tests/treatments.
  • Get some Tucks pads and wipes! I didn't use regular toilet paper for weeks. I also sat on a pillow all the time. Pop the Ibuprofen every few hours and you should be a lot better in a few days.

I tried the tucks with witch hazel at the hospital and they burned so I took them off right away.. Maybe I should have let them sit to see if it would feel better first?   Do you remember if they burned at first when you put them on??

  • Im sorry you're so sore!! I had a beautiful 3rd degree tear with Norah..and from what Im reading, I must have a high pain tolerance or a really good Doctor b/c I never had any discomfort...I did use tucks and spray and the peribottle while I was in the hospital and it felt good...I just took my meds on schedule and made sure I was prompt with my stool softeners...

    Get better soon!!

  • I'm sorry to hear that you're feeling so rotten. :(  I had 'roids so bad that I never once noticed the pain from tearing.  It took me 2 weeks before I was really walking normal or sitting on hard surfaces.  I had a second boppy that I sat on, soaked in the tub, and took ibuprofen.
  • i feel your pain...so so sorry :(

I LIVED on the boppy pillow it was the only way i could sit normally. For about 6 weeks...

  • you all are making me so happy I had a c-section... :)

Seriously though - my best friend tore badly for both of her kids, and also had bad hemmerroids... it took her much longer to get up and around than it took me.   I remember she sat on one of those donut things, or just layed on the couch on her side.   She was miserable.    Get some pain meds from your doctor.   Don't feel like a wimp, make sure you ask for some relief.  It doesn't have to be so terrible.   They give you percoset after a c-section, and it's safe for BF'ing, so maybe you could get that to help you get more comfortable for a few days.

I'm sorry, that must hurt so bad.  I can't imagine..  I hope you get to feeling better soon.

  • I had both, and I am still glad I did the vbac!  (And I would pick a vaginal birth again.)

I had a partial 3rd degree tear and it hurt for a while.  You don't want to leave the tucks in place, it just supposed to be rubbed down there and then tossed.  Try and stay off of your butt as much as possible.  Also take lots of sitz baths.  Those always helped me feel better right away!   It seemed like it took maybe a week to feel better, but probably more like 2 weeks before it wasn't so hard to move.  Oh, and I LOVED my peribottle, as well as the inflatable doughnut they gave me at the hospital.

Hang in there!  Each day will get better!

  • I went through a few cans of this

They gave it to me at the hospital.  I tried not to take the meds they sent home but in the end I don't think I could have made it without them.  I took them like clock work and by the end I was feeling much better.  A few days before I ran out I was worried about running out and how I would survive.

Hang in there, it does get better, I think I used Ice for 4 days with my DS.  I don't know what degree tear I had but I knew it hurt.

I hope you feel better soon.

The first couple of days it stung a little bit when I would first touch the wipe or pad to the spot, but it went away after a couple seconds. The cooling relief made it so worth the couple seconds of sting. Maybe try again tomorrow and see if its any better? I think I used both for a full 4 weeks and then just the pads till around my 6 week check.

  • I had 4th degree tears with DD, and my Dr told me that it was the most she had to cut somebody in her 14 years of delivering babies. Anyway that sure didn't help my pain any(DD was only 7 lbs but was coming out sidways)

Anyway for me taking the meds like clock work and the stool softner helped a lot, along with sitting on the donut. After like 5 days I just took ibprofun, and that helped. And I would say at about 2 weeks I was feeling alot better, and at 4 weeks I was back to feeling the same.

Good luck, I so feel your pain.

  • Oh another thing that helped was putting a compress of ice down there...

  • 1 Ibuprofen + 1 Aspirin + stool softeners

As often as the label allowed.

Also, the poofiest maxi pads are the most comfortable to sit on.  No scooting under any circumstances.  Baths actually kind of stung for me.

I had an 2nd degree tear and I was much, much better after about 10 days of taking it very easy.  (Minimal walking and standing).

  • Oh wait.  Acetaminophen!  Not aspirin!

(Also, those ice pack baby diapers for the first 48 hours).

  • Its all coming back to me now.  I'm so sorry you hurt, those first few weeks were miserable...down there.  Sits baths, peri bottle and stool softeners were all my friends.  The nurse gave me the donut but reminded me that it could do more harm by leaving your peri area unsupported and could tear it more.  Ice packs work wonders too.

  • I tore up and then had an episiotomy also no fun. I would sit on my boppy and that helped out alot! It was about 2 weeks until I felt almost normal. I would use lots of ice packs too if I were sitting for any length of time

  • Painkillers.  I kept on top of those painkillers.  Plus loads of Ibuprofin.  Plus witch hazel pads and dibucaine lotion in my unders.  Sorry it hurts - it does suck.  I felt better in a couple weeks though.

  • I should also share with you that I had a friend who tore really bad and was really swollen down there I guess when they sewed her back up... so somehow, she wasn't sewn up quite "right"... she was still having a lot of pain with sex and things just weren't right down there even a year after... she was brave enough to tell her doc about it - this is important!! - and they did some physical therapy (yes, I know) and that didn't help, so she ended up having surgery to fix it down there.   So for all of you with bad tears, make sure you speak up if things don't seem to get back to normal.
