Why aren't you drinking???

Is anyone else sick of people asking them rude questions such as "Why aren't you drinking - are you pregnant?!"  I feel like I'm asked this everywhere I go lately.  It didn't bother me the first few months we didn't get pregnant, but now it's becomming rather frustrating and depressing.  Anybody have any clever one-liners to use?

Good message board etiquette.  We want to know who you are before you start jumping in with questions.  So, who are you?  How long TTC, etc?

To answer your question, I suck at that one.  I never know what to say when people ask me.  Normally it's just "I don't feel like it"

yes... what's more annoying is when the people closest to me say this, and i want to reply with, "if i were f'ing pregnant, wouldn't YOU know by now?!"... what is more annoying than that, is that i don't drink alcohol but maybe a couple times a year anyway, and rarely even get buzzed... so me not drinking should be the norm. i have no one liners... i am just t the point where i give a "WTF?!" stare at them and they shut up.

I see, sorry if I sounded offended!  I'm Annie.  I live in Mesa, AZ, I teach 6th grade.  We've been TTC for 7 months now.  I've just been totally frustrated with people lately and then remembered this site from when I got married, so I thought I'd see who else was out there maybe experiencing the same thing as me.

I agree.  Most people are aware we are TTC so it's like "Either we are pregnant and not ready to tell you, or we're not and you're making it worse by asking." 

 Yeah, I think I'm going to start flat out telling people "Wow, that's a really rude question."  I don't know what else to do.

Yeah, that one never works because my husband is a doctor and so all our friends are in that circle! 

 I suppose there just isn't an answer, if you've never been in this situation you have no idea you're being rude.

Welcome!  And I hardly ever drink either, but if I do and people ask, I usually use the "I'm driving" excuse.  But I surprisingly don't get asked too much which is nice.

I just mean that since most of our social circle consists of doctors they know every illness/medication and then they're just nosy/interested.  I'm not a good liar with them is all I meant.

Really? ?If it was something really personal, they'd insist on you telling them what your illness is and what medication you're taking. ?Wow, sorry. ?I'd tell them to mind their own business.?

Thanks for all the insight/advice/support.  Wow, I feel a lot better just having everyone listen to me.  You can only complain to your family for so long before you feel like you're saying the same thing over and over.  It's nice to have others out there to listen.  So thanks all!

I'm not a big drinker, so it's usually not an issue.  On the rare occasions it's arisen, I usually say I don't feel like wine/beer/drink tonight and that's good enough. 

Other excuses:

-I'm driving tonight.

-I am trying to lose some weight/get healthier.

-I'm limiting myself to two glasses of wine a week, and we've got a great bottle at home for this weekend.

-Why are you asking?

That tends to throw people off and indicate it is not a topic open to conversation.
