Success after IF

RP: for those that have had a lap, anyone wish that they hadn't?

I know this is a strange question...but I just had my consult with an OBGYN that my RE referred me to for a lap.  and during the consult he basically told met hat a lap does not really increase your chances of pregnancy with endo???  what??  I just don't get that.  he was really caught up on the fact that I don't have much pain.  I kelt telling him that that has changed since I started doing the acupuncture.  Basically he left the decision up to me. I am so confused and just wanted some advice.  my intuition tells me to get it done.  I have had it before and it wasn't that bad.  and then my mind can be at ease.  My RE gave me the same advice, but said that I could keep going with IUI's with injectibles and onto IVF as well, if we wanted to.

I was diagnosed 9 years ago with a lap, and now we are 14 months into TTC and have done 3 IUI with clomid cycles that haven't worked.  I suggested doing a lap to make sure endo is not the problem before I throw more money into any more IUI's.  I feel like they just want me to do IVF and be done with it.

so, any advice is greatly appreciated.  my head is swimming.  IF just blows.  thanks!

Re: RP: for those that have had a lap, anyone wish that they hadn't?

  • I was told getting the lap and removing endo would not increase my chances for getting PG on a natural cycle. Although there are a few ppl on this board who did get pg in the cycles following their laps.

I did not even know I had endo going in, so it was mostly diagnostic.  When he found stage II endo, he removed it.  It was adhering my ovary to my abdominal cavity, so I'm glad I had it done.  It seems like something like that could affect ovulation or even how many eggs they can retrieve.

Once my RE found the endo, he skipped over IUI and went straight to IVF.  IVF has really good success rates for endo patients, so I would consider not doing any more IUI.

I would get the lap done.  I think it is a good idea to set you up for the best IVF as possible.

    Best wishes going forward!

  • I would certainly do the lap, have the endo removed and look at moving on to IVF if you have 4 failed IUI's.  I never felt my endo, but when they did the lap they removed quite a bit. GL
  • I was also told that a lap - even w/ removing endo - would not increase my chances of getting pregnant. BUT - I wanted to get it done anyway - b/c like you, my intuition was telling me too. And it's a relatively easy procedure so that is another reason I went ahead w/ it. I was also very confused as to if I should do it or not ... my head was spinning a lot from thinking too much about it. BUT - I am so glad I did.

I did have mild endo - to which was removed.

And the very next cycle I got pregnant w/ my baby - who is now 2.5 weeks old!

    GL hon!

  • I definitely do not regret my lap. I don't understand how what your doctor said about a lap not increasing the chances either. My story is in my siggy, but basically we tried for 3.5 years with an unexplained diagnosis and not one BFP. After my failed IVF last December ('07), I had a biopsy done which showed I lacked a protein needed for implantation (Beta-3 integrin protein). I was put on 3 months of Lupron Depot, which is also a treatment for endometriosis. My repeat biopsy showed that the implantation issue was corrected, but I had two more failed IUI's after the Lupron therapy. I requested a lap because I kept getting leftover cysts from the injectables, and I wanted to know if I had endo. At first my RE resisted, saying that the lap was not needed because even if I had endo the Lupron treated the implantation issue. She agreed to do the lap, and removed Stage II Endo. I never had any symptoms, besides IF and the biopsy results. After the lap, my RE said she could see why the IUI's weren't working. She said I had a "toxic environment for embryos". I got my BFP on the first cycle post lap using IUI with injectables. Sorry that got so long.

If I were you I would definitely get the lap before pursuing IVF or any other treatments. Especially considering that you I wish I would have done it sooner! Good luck, and hope this helps.

  • thank you thank you ladies!  I really needed to hear your stories and solidify the fact that I am not going crazy here.  I am going to get it done.  I need to put my mind at ease.  thank you for your responses, and I pray that very soon I will be posting much more on this board!
