Can you be honest? Say... "its such a great day out...all my work is done for the day, do you mind if I leave at _time_ and take DD to the park? I can use some vacation hours if I need to."

Unfortunately my work is never done! There's a list 10 spreadsheets long of projects in queue that I could pick up if I was "free". 

My bosses are so awesome that they would totally let me but again, I'm the last hire for this group so I don't want to ask for any special favors. It's just not my style.

I always use "it's Friday and traffic is going to be crazy, can I go home now?"

My boss is usally cool about it. Evens out with all the other stupidity.
