My girls just started cereal - we are doing it twice a day,and I have been just giving them a rounded tablespoon each time. They eat it all, so I'm thinking it's time to increase it. I'm wondering how much they should be eating, and once we start other foods (sweet potatoes, etc.) next week, do you decrease the amount of cereal, do you offer cereal and veggie at each meal, and when do you go to three meals per day?
It's all so confusing - thanks for any input - I'm totally at a loss for how to do this!
Re: Starting solids - help please
I don't know what's right, but what we did:
We didn't offer more than one food at a "meal" for the first month or two so when they started veggies, we offered only the veggie. We fed whatever the food was until they stopped opening their mouths for the spoon. The actual amount varied from day to day. After a month or two of solids we went to two meals a day, and then three meals around 9 or 10 months (I forget exactly)
I can tell you what we do. They have two meals a day right now and will start three around 8 month. We do 3 tablespoons on oatmeal and I add one to two tablespoons of a fruit. We do veggies in late afternoon about four Tbs.
Start with cereal once a day. When they reach 4 Tbs. start the second meal. You can then add veggie into the mix then fruits. I really suggest the book Super baby foods. It's a great help. If you don't want to spend the money check out gerber and beechnut's website. They have help for what and when on their sites.
