Anyone use Similac Alimentum?

I just got back from the Dr's and they tell me that DS has a milk protein allergy (gas, fussiness, blood in stool) and that he should take Alimentum from now on.  They gave me ready to feed samples, which I like, but it's expensive.  Does anyone know if the powder Alimentum is hard to mix and whether it's worth it to pay for the RTF?  I've heard that powder Alimentum is really clumpy and that RTF is better.

Re: Anyone use Similac Alimentum?

  • My DS wouldn't eat the powder at all. But he had trouble tolerating the powder with regular formula too. It seemed to mix fine when we did try it. Hannaford and BRU have the best prices on the RTF.

  • my ds has reflux and a suspected allergy and we are using the powder--it is still expensive (a small can here is 27.99)!  i do not find it hard to mix at all.  it is thin though--so now we are having issues with spitting up (something he was not doing before the switch).  i have heard rtf is better bc it is thicker.

my pedi recommended that i add rice cereal to help with spitting up but i cannot remember if it's 1/2 teaspoon or 1 teaspoon per ounce--i need to call them in the AM.

(sorry for typos--typing with 1 hand since mr. reflux needs to be held upright for 30 minutes after eating.)

  • We use the powder because DS threw up the RTF when we gave it to him.  I don't have any trouble with clumping.
  • RTF is so expensive but so worth every penny, for us anyway. The powder smells so bad it makes me want to gag. DS doesn't much care for the powder and has a hard time keeping it down. It seems to make him very gassy as well. It also makes his breath smell awful! When we tried the powder I never really had a problem with it clumping up or anything. Mostly just the awful smell and DS doesn't do well with it which is why we went to RTF. We've been using the RTF since he was about 6 weeks old and it does so much better for DS. BTW, DS takes Alimentum for milk protein allergy as well and also for reflux.
