When did you start pumping?

What time of day?

Did it effect your supply?

Re: When did you start pumping?

  • I started pumping at 4 weeks. I do it at night once DD is asleep for the night. I freeze it flat in the Lansinoh bags.

My supply got better once I started pumping since draining the B makes you produce more milk. Also, I'm not as sore in the morning since I drained them before bed.

  • I started pumping at night, after I knew he would be asleep for a while, otherwise I felt like I wouldnt have enough to feed him. After a while my supply got bigger, and now I need to keep pumping to keep my supply up, as well as make sure I get enough calories/ water during the day.

  • I started pumping and feeing her a bottle during week 1.  Pumping didn't hurt me as much as breastfeeding did and it gave me an excuse to have 15 minutes to myself to pump.  I think it really helped with my milk supply.  She would mess around when she was actually breast feeding so in 15 minutes I could pump 2-6 oz bottles and then I would feed her from the bottle and know exactly how much she was getting.
  • I started pumping immediately at the hospital - I knew I had problems making milk and I wanted a pump ASAP

I hated pumping but it didn't hurt like breastfeeding did. And BFing Willow would take 90 minutes or more.  Pure torture.

Plus I loved having an excuse to leave - I would surf the net why pumping.

In the end I never had enough milk whether I pumped or not, so she was 50/50 BM/FF til 3 months old then just formula (which IMHO is WAY WAY easier then breastfeeding)

  • Even though I am a beginner my dd's pediatrician had me start bf after day 2 because of her jaundice.  I pumped every time after a feeding but once her jaundice was pretty much gone I stopped pumping as much - has almost been a week now.  Doing it so often made me feel like I had an over supply so it's helped me produce a little less which seems to be fine by dd.  She's feeding in less time because I used to try to feed her for an hour at a time throughout the entire day at least every 2-3 hours and on both sides.  Now she only needs to feed on one side per feeding.  While the nurses came to check on her with her bilirubin she was gaining at least 2 ounces a day and is why I'm not very concerned anymore.
  • I started pumping when Kaylin was 2 or 3 weeks old. I did it in the morning due to an oversupply issue. I would pump just a couple ounces because I didn't want to make the problem worse but I would be so full in the am that she could not keep up with the fast flow and would refuse to nurse.

Other than that pumping, I waited to pump until she was 6 weeks old. BFing was hard enough in the beginning that I didn't need the added stress of having to pump every night. I think the constant BFing over those first 6 weeks really helped to regulate my supply and put us on the right path with BFing.

  • I started building my frozen supply when Blake was 2 weeks old.  I pump every morning about an hour after his morning feeding.  I use this supply now when I am out and about in inconvenient places for nursing so that he gets used to the bottle.  And then DH always has some if I want to go out and leave him with him too.

I think it has effected my supply but not drastically.  A lot of times he doesn't empty me throughout the night when he eats less and it's somewhat of a relief to pump it off.  I pump between 4-8 oz per morning.
