I was always so paranoid about putting blankets in their cribs as soon as they were able to start moving around. I stripped their bumper bad, and everything out so they just sleep on a sheet. I was so afraid of them smothering themselves, or covering their faces.
Now that they are older (almost 17 mo) I wonder if it is Ok to put a blanky in their crib yet? Sometimes I think they might get cold, or want to cuddle with something soft. I have stuffed animals and tiny little taggy blankets. But would you, or do you put blankets in their crib?
I have a little space heater in their room, and they have blankets in their play pen that they love to lay down on.
Just looking for your opinions. TIA!
Re: Blankets in crib
I'm pretty sure the AAP says blankets are fine after 1 year. Evelyn's lovey is a blanket and Charlotte likes to sleep with a blanket (although she doesn't have a particular attachment to it), as well.
we put a blanket in DS's crib at about 6mos - it was a crocheted type- so it had holes he could breathe through if he put it over his face.
we have yet to find him with a blanket on his face while sleeping- but i still use the crocheted ones... now i put 2 in there.
My girls are 21 months and I don't let them use blankets. I just don't feel that it is safe now.
I dress them very warm at night plus they wear sleep sacks.
heeheee. yeah we have been the same way so i am right there with you on MOTY!
My boys started out with handmade knit blankets and now have a warmer fluffier blanket. I think they should be perfectly fine
I started putting crocheted blankets in their crib at 5 months after bringing in the blankets and asking the pedi if she thought they were safe. After four months (or good head control is present) the risk of SIDS goes down considerably-and she ok'd the blankets.
Personally I would think a light blanket at 17 months would be safer than the potential hazards of a space heater. (Not a flame-I am slightly afraid of space heaters and electric blankets)
Our pediatrician said she strongly advises parents to not use blankets until their kids are 2 years old. I thought she was wackadoo, so I googled and I found an article published w/in the last year that basically said that the majority of proported SIDS cases in kids 1-2 years old were actually suffocations, where the baby was found with a blanket over its face.
So that freaked me out and my guys don't get blankets yet. I'm on the hunt for some nice crocheted blankets though - I really think my guys would like them.

I would like to read that article if you know where it was? I like to be informed on the topic and there is so much uncertainty out there concerning SIDS and SIDS-related deaths for children older than 1.
We also do the crocheted blankets. I just feel safer due to the wholes. MIL bought them twin size fleece ones for christmas but I wasn't ready yet. The boys are 21 months old btw.
My girls started sleeping with blankets just after their first birthday. I was nervous so for the first few months the blankets were only the knit type with holes in them.
UGH! Now I feel like I'm going insane! I can't find the article that I read a few months ago that freaked me out. Grrrr. Everything I'm finding now says it's safe to give kids blankets when they are 6 months.
We've used a lightweight quilt with ours from day 1. We only pull it up about half to 3/4 of the way. The nurses in the hospital did that so we just followed suit.
I do wonder though...
We have had blankets in their crib since they were 2 months. ?Now (at 13 months), they have a big blanket, a lovey, and a couple stuffed animals in there. ?It is really cute to see them (especially dd) cuddle with her lovey.
