Boy name help

We are having serious issues naming this baby. The middle name is Chamberlain (non-negotiable, family name on DH's side).  Our last name also starts with a C and is 3 syllables (hard C).

The only name we both agree on is Calvin, but I don't love it with Chamberlain C_______.  Is that too many Cs?

Other names we are considering:  Theodore (Teddy), Paul, Seth, and Thomas (but I HATE Tom/Tommy...how realistic is it that he'd be called Thomas?)

WDYT? Thanks!!

Re: Boy name help

  • I think Calvin would be fine!  Besides..people normally will just call him Calvin C___  no middle name will be used!
  • I like Paul and Seth. ?I agree that Calvin is way too many Cs and most likely Thomas would later on turn into Tom or Tommy.

  • I think you could get away with having him only called Thomas - at least until his friends take over and start doing their own nicknames.

Love Theodore, as you know. I say my least favorite of all those is Seth, but it is still a good name.

  • I think Calvin would be fine.  If the middle name were a hard 'c', I'd think it was too much, but since it's a 'ch' I think it's fine.

I love Theodore.  H wouldn't go for it, but I really like it.

If you hate the nicknames, I'd avoid Thomas.  We have a Lawrence and people constantly try to call him Larry.  Seriously.  Who names a baby LARRY?!

  • I vote for Paul or Seth.  More than likely Thomas will be Tom or Tommy whether you want it to be or not.  I'm thinking the hard C in Calvin and the hard C in your last name might be a bit much (even without the Chamberlain).  I like Chamberlain but rarely will you (or anyone) use his middle name.

If Calvin sounds good alone with your last name go with it.  It is NMS but if you like it, use it.

  • if you love thomas, i'd use it regardless of the nickname.  i know college aged kids who are called thomas so they avoided the nickname and my son is called by his full name even though it has an easily shortened and common nickname.  a few people use the nickname and at this point it is easy to either correct them or it is so infrequent that it doesn't matter.  kids will come up with own nickname probably no matter what we name them!
