Pain meds besides Epi, anyone have them?

I really don't want an epi for this birth but I am not real set on going "natural" either.  Has anyone had any of the other pain meds.  I will ask my dr of course, but just curious if they actually help.  In our child birth class the nurse said they would "take the edge off."  Just looking for real life experiences.

  • Before I could get the epi they offered to give me Stadol to "take the edge off".  It was total crap, IMO.  Made me loopy and feel like a heroin addict, but did nothing for the pain.  I'd just cut to the chase and get the epi.
  • I was just about to post the same thing as beta.  I hated Staidol.  It made me soooo tired and loopy but the pain was not any better at all.

  • I had nubain (sp?) ? It was supposed to take the edge off, but did absolutely nothing for the pain. ?It did make me feel really drunk and pass out in between contractions. I would have a contraction, pass out for 30 seconds, and wake up for the next contraction. ?I was still groggy for a while after he was born. ?I will never take it again.
  • my sil used nubain.  I don't understand it at all, it was important for he to go natural because she was dead set against the epidural.  In my mind, I'd rather have a medication that leaves me clearheaded and has better research behind its affect on the baby.

nubain is a narcotic, approved for delivery and labor but can cause respiratory depression in the baby.  also can make the mom "loopy".

ditto.  I didnt' even realize the nurse was giving it until I felt like I had been hit by a truck.  I progressed really quickly with my second ... the anesthesiologist was going to "be a minute" so she gave me nubain.  It did take the edge off in the sense I stopped shaking uncontrollably... but the contractions still hurt like hell , I just felt like I was drunk.  ds did have some minor respiratory issues at birth. I saw him right away, but they wanted to watch him for a few ... so I recovered in L&D and then saw him again when I got up to pp.

  • They gave me some narcotic, can't remember which one, that they said would "take the edge off" and it did, but only for a couple of minutes.  I felt sort of like I had a good buzz going on and then it all went away.  It probably would have been more helpful if it had lasted longer.
