Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

How do you know if you need a d&c?

Sorry if that's a weird question but I haven't been to the dr. yet. I had an ultrasound today but they didn't give me any information - just that "they didn't see a pregnancy there." Maybe I'll know more tomorrow, but does the dr. suggest this and what is it based on?

Re: How do you know if you need a d&c?

  • I don't know what exactly, my doc just suggested it.  However, even if he didn't I was going to ask for it because the night before I saw him I had already passed a good amount and was in a lot of pain.  I really needed the d&c for closure...I just wasn't mentally able to handle waiting to lose completely.

    1st pregnancy: m/c began 1/12/09 d&c 1/13/09 8wks. Baby stopped growing at about 6wks.

  • It seems weird to me that they would tell you that much, but not give you more information.  If they didn't see anything it could just mean that you're not as far along as you thought you were and it's too early to see anything... or it could be ectopic, in which case a D&C would not be a solution.  Good luck, I hope you get more information soon!
  • Thanks - yes, Gershi, agree and I'm so annoyed. I see the dr. tomorrow and will definitely be drilling him for more information. I don't know WTF "not seeing" a pregnancy means. I don't mean to be so hasty - I'm just drained from crying and all the emotions all day. I could be off by a few days depending on ovulation, but it certainly can't be weeks. So I'm really hoping he give me more insight tomorrow.
  • I chose to go that route because I had been walking around for 3.5 weeks with a non-viable fetus, and I didn't want to wait for my body to figure it out on its own. **HUGS**

  • I think that you can usually just opt for a D&C if you want one, or if your body is not passing things or going back to zero fast enough, they'll give you one after a few weeks.

I had a trans-vag US that they said showed "no sac" and I was kind of like, yeah no kidding, I'm pretty sure it's already gone... it may just be that you passed everything already.?

  • I'm so sorry for your loss.

My doctor recommended a D&C for me because my fetus was further along. He still left the final decision up to me though. In general, I think it should be a choice that you have.?

  • My doctor didn't really give us a choice.  I think it had something to do with having had twins.  I am sure your doctor will clue you in to your own personal circumstance and guide you. GL!

  • I was given the choice of a D&C, natural m/c or induced m/c. The D&C couldn't be scheduled until 4 days after I found out the baby had died and I didn't want to wait that long. I went with the induced m/c so I knew exactly when it would happen and could be in the comfort of my own home.
  • I wasn't really given much of a choice, but possibly because I was almost 16 weeks along and was bleeding so badly. I had to go to the ER because the cramping and bleeding was so intense and the ER doctor tried to remove the placenta and delivered the baby, but didn't get everything so then the OB on duty attempted to remove the rest of the tissue and couldn't either so she said I needed to have the d&c to ensure that everything was removed in order to prevent the possibility of continued severe bleeding and an infection. I had to sign a release of course, but it wasn't presented as a decision for us to make, but rather presented as a surgery that they said I needed based on my current condition.
