Well it's been a long 72 hours. Thank you all for your prayers and wishes. We're still in the NICU and will probably be here through the weekend. ![]()
Ryan continues to have bloody stools/diapers and even though the initial test came back with it matching my blood, they want to continue testing for other things. On top of that, Ryan has become fairly jaundiced. Jaundice causes him to be lethargic, and not eating. Sounds like Heather and Maddy have a similar issue...
Ugh. He's been under a "black light" since last night but his beliruben score actually increased over night. So it's a waiting game. We met with just about every representative from each dept at the hospital this morning (Patient Care Rounds) and they think maybe he's allergic to cows milk but they still need to test further. Most allergies dont happen for a few weeks/months after birth.
Everyone is very nice and supportive, they keep commenting on how big he is - even though he's only 7lbs, 4oz... compared to the other preemies up here, he's huge! lol
Payton came to visit us last night and didn't really "get" that the baby is ours. I said, "Payton look at the baby" and she came right over to me and lifted up my shirt to see my belly. I said "no - that baby is here now." She went and pointed to him "baby?" and that was that. She wasn't thrilled with me holding him- she wanted up on my lap too- but for the most part she ignored him. I'm sure that'll change once we all get home and he doesn't leave.
Can anyone give me a few hints on making my Shrek feet go away? I'm so swollen and I don't remember it being quite this bad with Payton.

You have my continued prayers. I?ve been there and know how hard it is (esp. with a big baby that doesn?t look like he should be with the preemies). I hope they figure it out soon!
As for Shrek feet, mine took about 11 days. They kept getting smaller and I kept losing weight. I was on Rx diuretics that did nothing. The day I woke up and could see ankle and shin bones and my baby was home? That was a great great day. It?ll be here soon.
Hey Kim! I was just out on some errands, and I thought of you and Ryan and hoped that things are going better! Gavin had to go up to the nicu after he was born for low blood sugar. They kept saying how big he was! (He was 9lbs...) I can imagine that full-term babies must look so huge to the nurses there.
Gavin also had feeding issues, and became quite jaundiced. So, I totally understand the lethargy-no appetite-jaundice cycle. It wasn't until a nurse at the post partum center showed me a better hold for him that he started eating again. Then we just nursed as much as possible and even supplemented with some BM. He's a champion feeder now! I hope things start getting better soon!!
I hope they can find out what's going on soon and you can all get home!
For the ankles... they gave me some diuretics to help with water retention... you could see about that. Otherwise, just time. I remember having a night or two of CRAZY night sweats and that fixed it.
(((HUGS))) I really hope Ryan gets to come sooner rather than later. We are still praying for you guys.
Drinking lots of water should help your shrek feet.
Hi Kim -- thanks for the update on Ryan. I hope things start going your way soon and that you are able to get some answers with the blood. I'm sure it's horribly frustrating. You guys are in my thoughts and I hope you can both come home happy and healthy soon!
For your feet can you ask your OB for an Rx? They gave me meds and I was in the bathroom a lot but I lost a TON of water weight quickly.
Hey Kim, Just wanted to say you guys are still in my prayers and I'm so sorry Ryan is still in the NICU. I really hope they find out what is going on soon and that it turns out to just be a fluke and nothing serious.??I know it is so hard to sit and wait to see what is going on. I am sure your little guy will be home before you know it!?
Hang in there and I'll be thinking of you guys!
No advice on the shrek feet, I hope they go away soon!!

I hope you get to take him home soon! How exhausting. Hang in there, things will get better soon.
I had Shrek feet from 35 weeks until about 2 weeks after delivery. Putting them up helped a little, but they eventually do go away.
Hey there! First off congrats on your baby boy! I hope that everything is going well. The NICU is definately a hard place to have your baby - hang in there.
Hopefully you got some good information during rounds today!
The biliruben lights are tough, but work really well - after 2 days our boy's bili levels were down to normal. I hope they can figure out what is causing the bloody diapers, I bet that is scary.
What hospital are you at? We're in the NICU at Evergreen so let me know if you need anything - thinking about you and Ryan!
So sorry you have to stay longer! I was hoping you guys would be able to go home sooner rather than later!
Very cute about Payton lifting up your shirt though, my friends son did that afterwards too. To her, not to me, lol.
