Allergies to strawberries

Hi ladies,

Does anyone here have a DC whose allergic to strawberries? DD has had strawberries both at home (fresh) and at DC (fresh and frozen) and she has never broken out and yet she had some this morning at DC and she broke out i hives. This mornings was the forzen type and I'm wondering if it was due to the red dye...

 Any comments?

Re: Allergies to strawberries

  • never knew they dyed frozen strawberries, but that's a good guess.  dd breaks out in hives immediately after ingesting anything containing red dye.

  • Griffin had a suspected strawberry allergy around 9mos old. We had prick tests done- all negative, then at his 12mo appt we had blood tests done, also negative.... doc thinks the hives were from a virus- not food... since they lasted a few days.

The allergist said food hives usually come out pretty fast after eating the allergen and go away in a couple hours.  She also said that it can take a few times of exposure to a food before you see the reaction - so this could be the case for your DD.

DS has eaten the Gerber baby food strawberries a lot before that- she said that doesn't count b/c it's processed and can kill off the allergens... fresh is what usually gives the problem.

i would see the pedi/allergist - IMO you don't want to mess around with possible food allergies - you never know... it can get worse and cause breathing problems.  I felt MUCH better knowing I had an epi pen handy in case DS ever had an anaphilactic shock from anything.

  • I have gotten hives from fresh strawberries. Talk to your pedi - when I used to get them, I would feel like my throat was closing up and I got hives in my mouth.
  • DS seems to have a mild strawberry allergy.  He can eat some things - like strawberry yogurt, but I got him berry ice cream at a local dairy farm and after a few bites he started getting a rash on his face.  I took the ice cream away before he ate too much, and the rash went away within 20 minutes or so.  One other time when he was younger the same thing happened from eating a fresh strawberry.  So we just avoid strawberries now.

If your DD was allergic to red dye, I would think she would have had reactions to other things too - isn't that in a lot of different things?

  • Thanks ladies!

Sparky- good point on the red dye. DD doesnt like baby yogurt so I havent given her that and so far I give her mainly fresh fruit, veggies, chicken and meats and bread. I need to think about what else she may have eaten which contains red dye and yes I think it does take a few exposures. I'm going to ask DC to stop giving her the strawberries for now until i talk to her pedi.
