Well since your DS's birthday is in March it wouldn't really work for you but we did a WinterONEderland and I bought a bunch of snowflake, wintery decorations and her cake was a #1 with snowflakes and wintery colors.
We did a monkey theme, because we have always called DS "our little monkey" We did everything in yellow and brown and it turned out great.
Here are a few other ideas:
1st Birthday "Ball" (everything was ball themed, soccer balls, baseballs, basketballs etc. SUPER cute)
Dinosaurs, Farm animals, Luau, rubber duckies, Trains/Trucks/Planes- transportation type theme
I am not a fan of character themed parties. Especially at this age, DS wouldn't even know who it is! Plus, he'll want those themes when he is older so for now I get to do what I want! Good Luck! I started planning DS's when he was 4 months old!
DD's b-day is May 1st, so I did a garden theme. I made a butterfly cake & had flowers/bees/butterflies on all the decorations, etc. It was really cute!
Re: Unique First Birthday Themes?
You could do a space theme. I've found lots of really whimsical things on etsy for space themed birthdays.
We're doing Yo Gabba Gabba. haha
