sleeping on your left side

so the doc said that i should try and sleep on the left side........better circulation? and so on.

but i can't really stand it, it's soooo uncomfortable.

it is really that bad sleeping on your right side?

she also said sleeping on your back wasn't the great either.....

can someone teach me how to sleep standing up? ;-)

Re: sleeping on your left side

  • I toss and turn from both sides all night. I try to sleep on my left side but like you said, it's just not the most comfortable. I know, I need to learn how to sleep standing up too!

  • I find sleeping in any position uncomfortable now. I usually start on my left side and wake up on my right. If I happen to end up sleeping on my back then I wake up dizzy....nothing is comfortable (and I have a new bed that is normally very comfy). Though I can manage to fall asleep on the couch no problem! LOL

  • I am by no means your doc but my midwife said I could sleep on right or left.  As long as I wasn't sleeping on my back she's happy.  I have heard it's better to sleep on your left though.

  • I sleep much better on my right side than my left, so I stick to what works.
  • Well, listen to your doc.  But what does DD say?  Eh.  Do whatever helps you get a good night sleep unless you feel something funky going on in the ol' ute.

  • For me a body pillow and a small decorative pillow behind my back help keep my on my left side, I sometimes roll a little on my back but I dont think there is anything I can do to stop that.

  • my doctor said the same thing.  It has been an adjustment for me since I am a stomach sleeper.

Right now I am using the pregnancy wedge I bought at Motherhood.  I have one on my right and left so when I roll over I lean against it and it doesn't take up too much room.

I have been sleeping so much better since getting them.  At first I tried a body pillow and but it was too big for me.

  • Its only really beneficial to sleep on the left side if you have a tendency for low blood pressure. Otherwise any position that it comfortable for you is perfectly fine!
  • sleeping on your left does increase circulation.

sleeping on your back puts pressure on one of your major arteries that why one of the previous posters says she wakes up dizzy, she isn't getting enough blood flow.

I try to fall asleep on my left because before I was pregnant I would stay in whatever position I fell asleep in the entire night. Now I toss and turn and wake up feeling guilty when I find I'm on my back or right side. I've even caught myself on my stomache a few times which freaks me out--I know, i over-react to life, but still...

  • I have been trying to sleep on my left side also. I toss and turn all night and end up on my back or on my right side. I use to love sleeping on my left, but now that I am "suppose" to I hate it. I got hardly any sleep the last few nights.
  • Try sleeping on the couch! Just having support on my back even when I'm on my left side makes me feel a lot more comfortable. My doctor told me to sleep whichever way is comfortable. I usually sleep on my back but it's getting really uncomfortable. Good luck!!!
  • I've given up hope on any type of restful sleep a long time ago. I absolutely hate sleeping on my sides, especially the left. I end up on my back and thankfully I haven't had any side effects. My only saving grace is my snoogle which i make into a donut and sleep on my tummy. Thank God for that thing!!

  • Sleeping on your sides can be such a pain!  I haven't had a good nights sleep in days.  I can't sleep flat on my back because it causes BAD round ligament pain.  I have been sleeping sort of on my back with a pillow under my lower back and butt, making me sort of diagonal if that makes sense.  It helps to sort of tilt me on my side without making me sleep all the way on my left side.  Hope we all can get some good sleep soon!!
  • Ah, the ever elusive sleep. It's becoming a bit of a nightmare. I'm a back sleeper but am trying to sleep on my sides. If my hip didn't scream out in pain whenever I tried to sleep on my right side, I would do that. Because I HATE sleeping on the left. It's all just awful. I toss and turn and wake up repeatedly. All I can say is that I have found that the more pillows surrounding me the better. I cuddle with my body pillow on one side and another pillow against my back on the other. That makes it (slightly) better...
  • My doc said not to worry too much about how I sleep, but if I get short of breath or start to not feel well, that I should change positions.  I slept, for a long time, propped up on a couple pillows on my back.  That's gotten uncomfortable though (too much pressure from the babies) so now I flip flop from left to right, right to left.
  • I know me too! I just switch sides all through the night. Sometimes I lay half sideways half back. lol They said you will *know when not to sleep on your back anymore. It will be way to uncomfortable

  • My Dr. has told me the left side is better, but right or left is better then on your back. I have a really hard time sleeping on my left side, I would way rather be on my back or right side, what I have started to do lately and somewhat helps is use a body pillow and wedge it under my back, so it somewhat forces me to sleep on my left side, but really what ever position I can get confortable in is how I'm going to sleep.

  • I sleep on whatever side feels comfortable.  I can't sleep on either side for extended periods of time.  I also sleep on my back on occasion to stretch it out.

Most OBs will tell you, that getting sleep is more important than not getting any sleep.  It is better to sleep on the left side b/c of the vena cava and circulation but I would just sleep in what position feels comfortable.  Your body will tell you if it isn't right.
