how long does it take you to nurse?

I'm having trouble nursing my baby and am wondering how long people nurse their babies in a single feeding session if people don't mind sharing. I'm working with a lactation consultant who says that the baby's latch is fine but that I have a low supply, so I'm pumping to build the supply.

I once nursed my baby for 40 minutes and she still downed 3 oz from the bottle. I was wondering how long women who didn't have supply issues nursed their babies since I wonder if I'll end up just pumping and bottle feeding mine or whether I'll be able to get nursing to work ever.

  • That young, he would nurse anywhere from 10 - 40 minutes.

If you offer a bottle after nursing, she will likely eat it whether she is hungry or not.  The milk drips into her mouth, so she'll eat it!  If you have a low supply, giving bottles is not a good idea (unless she isn't gaining weight of course).  The best thing to do is just nurse nurse and nurse some more!  Rent a bunch of movies, sit on the couch all day, nest and nurse.  After 3 days of that, your supply should be up.

  • Ditto PP. At 3 weeks DS would nurse 20-45 mins. The best thing to do is nurse on demand that is as long and as often as she want to nurse then let her and your supply will increase.

  • Anywhere from 10-25 mins but never longer than that. Both of my DS have some powerful sucking power!

  • DD nursed forever in the beginning.. sometimes for 45 min to 1 hr!  The baby's sucking is what signals your brain to make more milk.  Until your supply is well established your baby might nurse frequently and for long periods of time.  Also, babies nurse for comfort too.  Your latch is good, so hang in there... like everyone says, it will get better!
