I just picked up DS#1 from being with the ED and he has 3 canker sores (at least that's what it looks like to me). He said that they don't hurt him, and that he didn't notice he had them....so there is no telling when it all started. He didn't have them on Friday night when he left me.
Any experience with them at all? Any tips? What are some causes that you know of first hand? (DH and I are speculating on hormones, vitamin deficiency, and trombone playing.) Also, by looking at the pic below would you come to the same diagnosis that I did? Thanks.
Re: Any experience with canker sores? (PIP maybe too graphic for some)
You get them from accidently biting your skin (lip) and then eating accidic foods. There is no imbalances or anything that I know of that you get them from. I get them all the time.
Is he too old for Hand foot and mouth..thats my other thought. Canker sores normally hurt/mild discomfort of some kind.
Yep, those look like canker sores, aka apthous ulcers. If they aren't really bothering him, I'd leave him alone. There isn't much you an do anyway, but salt water rinses help a little. They should be gone in a week. Avoid spicy foods and don't lt him rinse with anything that has alcohol in it.
Possible causes are stress, citrusy foods, being sensitive to a certain ingredient in some toothpastes (if he switched while gone for the weekend), hormones, and trauma among other things.
From the location of those ulcers, I'd watch him to make sure he isn't unconsciously biting his lip and therefore causing the ulcers. Did he just get braces on? Braces would rub his lip right along where those ulcers are and may be the cause. Just a possibility, although his teeth look pretty perfect in your siggie!
Ohhh, those hurt like a b*tch. I've gotten them from biting my cheek or lip. Just as it is starting to heal, it NEVER fails that I accidentally bite it again. It's one of those things that makes you just sit there with your mouth hanging open from pain when you do it.

I get canker sores often, as does my dad. Dad got one so bad on his uvulu several years ago, they put him in the hospital with a morphine drip, he lost 25 lbs, and they were 1 day away from a temp. feeding tube.
But, that's very extremen, and he actually has noticed a decrease in the frequency of them since then.
I don't know about hand, foot, mouth - but the fact that DS#1 said they don't bother him is surprising. Mine kill me. I know when I've got one coming on and I put alum (spice to help jar pickles) on it for about 10 seconds. burns like the dickens, but totally worth it to not have the days of pain associated with a full-blown canker sore.
Once, I went to the dentist with one, and he burned it off with acid. Same thing, hurt like hell for about 30 seconds, but he got rid of it.
Several things cause them...stress (but is your 10 year old that stressed?), mouth trama (dental visit, hitting the mouth while toothbrushing, or even biting the lip. I've gotten several at one time like your DS and it is so painful - so again, I'm shocked that he said it didn't bother him. I think it's also genetic to some extent. Dad gets them, I get them, but my sisters really don't.
Good luck!

I've had those and they look like canker sores. I got something at the drugstore that was a thick paste that you apply as a protectant and something that helps heals at the same time.
I cannot remember the name of it but it was in a small white tube with blue and orange colors on it.
Definitely look like canker sores to me, but it's a bit odd that they don't hurt (I used to get them all the time and the hurt.so.much, particularly in that location!)
My doc prescribed Kenalog in Orabase (it's a prescription version of the thick paste pp was describing), and it helped a bunch with pain, and protecting the area from further irritation while it heals.
