Lumpy rice cereal?

I gave DD rice cereal for the first time this weekend.  I mixed it with a spoon and it was so lumpy, no matter how much I stirred.  I ended up making a big batch in the food processor and then freezing it in cubes so I could get a smooth texture (which, by the way, looked, smelled, and tasted like paste- I'm so not a fan of rice cereal).  What do you do to make your rice cereal and what texture is it?  I used Earth's Best brand.

Re: Lumpy rice cereal?

  • Dumb question, but did you try adding more liquid?

  • Makes no sense, but I found that I have to put the milk in the bowl and add the cereal, if I do it reversed it ends up like a chunky paste...
  • I did try adding more liquid, it just became lumps floating in liquid.  Interesting about adding the cereal to the milk.  I did it in the reverse so maybe that will help.

  • Very interesting. We haven't started making our own yet so I use Earth's Best too. The first box we had the cereal could get really runny with more liquid. This second box we bought is clumpy. It's like sticky rice! I'm actually going to call EB and see what they say. I'll let you know what I find out.
  • Just got off the phone with the folks at Earth'sBest. The woman I spoke with said that the cereal is being manufactured in a new plant in Germany. They have been making baby food since 1911. The "new" cereal is a bit different consistency and brighter color. She assured me the product is still up to their quality standards. Just add more liquid to thin it out.
