2 yr old suddenly waking up in middle of night

Jacob has always been a great sleeper. Put him down at 7:30 and wouldn't hear a peep out of him until morning. But this weekend, he was up throughout the night, on Friday and Saturday night. Saturday was worse, we put him to bed at 8, then he was up at 1:30, 3:30 and up for good at 5:30. When he woke up the first 2 times, dh went in and covered him back up and rubbed his back. You could tell he wasn't really awake, and struggling to go back to sleep. This morning he woke up at 4, and he stood up but I laid him back down and told him it's not time to get up yet. I covered him up and he went back to sleep until 6:30. Not sure if this is somethign they go through, or what. I'm even thinking he's dreaming, and it's waking him. Anyone else go through this, and how long did it last?

We did go through this and I finally figured out that he was teething with his two year molars. The teeth start moving and causing pain even before they pop through. I would try rubbing some nightime orajel on where his two year molars during nap and at night would be and see if that helps.

note: his bottom ones popped through first.

unless  he's in there screaming his head off I wouldnt go in.  Michelle kinda wakes up here and there thru out the night but goes right back to sleep.  She mostly babbles and talks to herself before going back to sleep.

My DS started doing this also. Some nights he is fine and others he is screaming 'daddy! mommy!' until we come in and calm him down.  I'm assuming he is having dreams.
