How did you choose the kind of formula you use? What would you recommend to a formula rookie? I'm going to have to suppliment and I don't know where to start. TIA.
I talked to my pedi and she said the same thing as newleywed. The costco brand was the same as enfamil, so I went with that. I had tried one other one (I think it was good start) and my son spit up more with that one.
Our pedi said Similac and Enfamil are essentially the same and to use whatever the baby preferred. He said Good Start is formulated more for older babies and would prefer we didn't use that kind. Law was on Similac at first, but he spit up a lot after his formula bottles, so we tried Enfamil. Same thing with it. We moved to Similac Isomil (soy) and he did a lot better, so that's what we went with.
Are you signed up with the formula companies yet? We were able to give Law the freebie stuff first to figure out what kind to use. And the checks were fabulous after that. He only got one formula bottle a day for the most part and I think I only paid for a full can of formula once or twice -- I'd usually use two $5 checks at Walmart or HyVee for the small cans and only end up paying a couple bucks.
I used Member's Mark from Sam's club. It's like Similac. I'm not sure why I choose Similac to start with, but I did and it worked fine. After a few purchases of it I try the Sam's brand.
Good Start is the easiest on the tummy as far as the regular formulas, a tiny bit more money but worth it. When DS was born I did not want to listen to anyone and I choose Enfamil b/c it had more ARA and DHA than the others but he was so gassy and uncomfortable on it so we switched to Good Start, two of my friends had to switch to Good Start too. I put DD on it at birth and no issues.
Jen - Mom to two December 12 babies

I would try the store brand that you most commonly shop at 1st, you can return it if your DD doesn't take the 1st 4 or 5 bottles you make. My DD would only take Similac Advanced and she was on formula until two years. I wish I had tried the store brand 1st.
Our ped said formulas are all regulated so closely that unless your DC has a specific issue, then generic is fine. (We used Costco's Kirkland brand without any problems.)
