Ear infection - how long for antibiotics?

How long on antibiotics before your child seems to have some relief?

DD was at the docs last monday w/ and ear infection and started amoxicillin then.  This weekend she is still pulling on her infected her and telling us "boo boo"  She never runs a fever with her ei's but is not herself - acting whiny, cranky. One time in the past we went back after a week on amox and the pedi prescribed a stronger antibiotic b/c the amox wasn't cutting it.  All other times (she's had 3 or 4 ei's) the amox was enough.. I think I;m going to call again tomorrow to have her ear checked :(

Re: Ear infection - how long for antibiotics?

  • My dd always runs a temp with her ear infections... and is up all night crying!  Usually the antibiotic takes about 24 hours to kick in.  I would think she now just needs a stronger antibiotic.  Amox worked once with my dd and never again.  I would call the doctor again.  You don't want it to go on to long if it's still hurting.  My dd has ruptered her ear drum a few times and that sucks!!!
  • We had the same problem with Amox. not being strong enough for my 2 yr old.  They switched the anitboitic to Omnicef (I think I am remembering the name correctly...) and it cleared right up.  Now he just gets that instead of the Amox.

I would definitely call back!  Good luck.

  • Amoxicilin never worked for Claire, ever.  She always needed something stronger.  Usually she had Cephazil (sp?) and that cleared it up.  If your dd started it on Monday and is still complaining, I'd definitely take her back in tomorrow.  Good luck :)

  • it's about 3 doses for us.

We always use Omnicef, though ... the amoxi gives DS bad diarrhea.

  • DS only ever had one (mercifully) and within 24 hours he felt better.

  • I called because my dd was sick this week too.  The nurse said the pain should be gone after 72 hours in the antibiotic.  I would definitely take her back.
