Is m/s stronger with twins?

Holy cow, ever since I was 6 wks and 4 days I have been soo sick!  I read that if you have low blood pressure you are more prone to m/s but I was wondering if it has anything to do with being pg with twins as well.

I honestly don't know how I'm going to continue working when I feel this sick all day.  I drink peppermint tea, and chew pep. gum, sniff lemons all the time and try to keep a little bit of food in me at all times.  I also wear sea bands the whole day which help.  I have extreme food aversions and can't smell anything cooking or even walk in the kitchen.  I can't even open the fridge without gagging.  Is there anything else I can do to help this?

Re: Is m/s stronger with twins?

  • For me I barely had any morning sickness. ?I was lucky in that sense. ?Vibes for you that the sickness passes VERY soon!!!

  • I didn't feel "great" all the time, but I never actually threw up. Some women have it very strong and others not at all....just like singleton pregnancies!

I hope you feel better soon!!?

  • I actually never had m/s, but my understanding is that MoMs are more likely to get it and are more likely to have severe cases b/c of the amount of hormones they produce.  I hope you feel better soon!

  • I had triplets and had absolutely no morning sickness.
  • I have heard that yes, it is much worse with twins.  That said, I was very lucky and did not have ANY.  I hope you feel better soon!
  • Man, am I jealous that you all didn't have m/s or it wasn't too bad!  I wonder if my low blood pressure has a lot to do with it....grrrr.
  • I had it with my singleton, but it was worse (and I hate to say this - lasted longer) with the twins.

Mine was so bad that I was throwing up and losing weight, so the doc prescribed me Zofran. But, with my first she suggested a combination of Unisom sleeping pills and B6 (or B12)? It has been a while. Talk to your doc about it. The Unisom / B vitamin combo saved me from all day nausea with my first.
  • I had really mild morning sickness ... I was really lucky.  I think it might have something to do with heredity, because my mom never had bad morning sickness, either.

You could try ginger altoids.  Sometimes those can stave off puking for a while.

If it's really bad, you can always ask your doctor for Zofran.  Good luck; I hope it passes soon.

  • I had higher blood pressure and had hyperamisis.  I had worse hyperamisis with my youngest than I did with my twins.
  • I was that sick and my dr said that twins can make it worse.  I lost 10lbs in the first tri but did feel better around wk 13.  I know, it seems a long way off...good luck.

  • I had m/s with both my singleton and triplet pregnancies and it was 10 times worse with the triplets.  It started at exactly 6 wks for both and lasted until about 20 wks.

I took Zofran for both pregnancies - even with the Zofran it was extremely hard to do anything, I was really sick.

  • You sound just like I was! I was throwing up multiple times every day and couldn't do or smell anything.  I lost 15 pounds in the first trimester because of it.  My peri said it's very common with twins b/c you have double the hormones in your system. I only had nausea and no vomiting with my first.

I took B6 vitamins and Unisom 3 times a day.  It took the edge off the nausea and vomiting but in the beginning made me very sleepy.  Eventually the Unisom didn't bug me anymore.  I improved dramatically at 12 weeks. I'm still vomiting about once every other day and smells still bug me but nothing like before.

     Hang in there!!!

  • I also had hyper emesis- constant, nonstop vomiting. By 12w, I had lost 35lbs and the concern was about my life at that point. By7w, I couldn't keep sips of water down and had to have IVs put in. I had IVs at home until 11w at which point they had to be taken out bc they were occulded (I had gotten  a blod clot at the IV port and my hand and arm were swelling from the fluid). At 12w, I had a PICC line put into my heart and remained on it until aprx 23w. I did not have MS, I had HEG. I was told for me, the HEG had hit bc of amultiples pregnancy- my body could not handle the hormones. I was hospitalized 3 times before 12w, in on bedrest at 12w until 14w... I got worse until 18-19w. Bad enough that I couldn't open my eyes with out getting sick... gah.

Now, ask me why I had my tubes tied Stick out tongue

no day but today~ RENT  *HEG survivors*

  • my m/s with this pg has not been horrible, but it's notibly worse than my first singleton pg.

low BP has caused me to have some dizzy/fainting spells, but not m/s.

talk to your doc if you really have trouble keeping food down, eating, etc... b/c you want to make sure the babies get enough... there are meds to help with nausea when necessary.

    feel better!

  • The only thing that helped me was prescription drugs, zofran was my best friend.  I also had bad food adversions, I couldn't walk near my kitchen w/out holidng my nose or I would throw up.  I would gag any time I went near the pantry, fridge, freezer, or sink.

I did find that Jolly Ranchers & Blow Pops helped sometimes and so did pretzels.

    Good luck.

  • I haven't had a singleton so I don't have anything to compare it to, but I can tell you that I started with bad m/s around 7.5w and am still suffering (not what you want to hear). I have been on Zofran since about 9w and this has cut back the vomiting to maybe 2x/week rather than every day. If I feel ok one day and don't take the Zofran, I inevitably pay the next day with vomiting either in the middle of the night or first thing in the morning. It is horrible. Zofran doesn't get rid of the nausea altogether, but it's great for the vomiting. Don't even get me started on food aversions - it's much quicker to list the 5-10 things I CAN tolerate than to get in to all of the things that have me gagging. A lot of people feel better around 12-14w, so I hope for your sake, you're one of those people! Good luck in the mean time. It definitely stinks!
  • I've read everything is more concentrated when its multiples.  Knock on wood, I've managed to only deal with some mild nausea and a couple of days of horrible indigestion/gas, but overall, no real morning sickness.  I have been utterly EXHAUSTED however and cannot get enough sleep or naps.

Seems like if you were sick with your first, or mom was sick when she was preggo, you're more likely to deal with symptoms... although its not a rule.

    Hang in there!

  • With my singleton pg (a girl, which OWTs will tell you make you sicker than boys), I was not sick for a second.  With the boys, I was nauseous/had food aversions for several weeks... no actual vomiting, but I just didn't feel good.  Hope yours passes soon!
  • mine got better as time went by, but weeks 8-10 were the worst...and it was much better by 12 weeks and gone by 15 weeks. ?i was given zofran to help the dry heaves and puke. ?also, preggie pop drops worked for me. ?i hear you on opening the fridge. ?i couldn't look inside. ?yuck! ?feel better.
  • Blech. I hope you feel better! I never had m/s, thank God.
  • sick as a dog until the day i delivered. blech. i refused to leave my house before 11am because I was so sick in the morning.

I never knew about the low bp issue but that could have been another huge factor with me since mine is super low. hopefully yours will pass soon.

the only things that i could eat were wonton soup with no wontons..the broth was a ginger broth that was amazing and canned pears. seriously i think i ate these for almost two months straight.

    hang in there :)

  • I had hella m/s with Anakin, but it was much more intense this time around. I don't consider it double the m/s, just much more intense.
  • I never had a singleton so I have nothing to compare it with... but I was SUPER sick in the beginning.  I definitely got sick every morning at least once and was nonstop nauseous.  I wore sea bands, sucked on preggie pop drops, and drank ginger beer.  I totally feel for you because it was HORRIBLE but it will go away... promise!

  • I had horrible m/s.  It started at 5.5 weeks and subsided around 15 weeks.  I hated the smell of most things.  I tried to eat every carbs/protein every 2 hours to keep my belly full.  I threw up my breakfast at least 3x/week, but I do feel so much better now.  I did the SeaBand thing too.  Jolly Ranchers also helped me.
