So my son got the Soothie pacifier in the hospital and because it is very close to the nipple on the bottles (he gets these at the babysitter) and the LC said closest to the nipple shape we have stuck with them. However, we just bought a new pack and I noticed they said 0-3 months. Should we be upgrading since he is 3 months now? I am wondering when I can switch pacifiers (he got some Born Free Orthodontic ones for Christmas that go to 6 months) without impacting the breastfeeding...I use a shield still to control flow....not sure if that makes a difference. I just don't want to keep him on this one if it will impact gum and orthodontic development. I don't want to change and impact breastfeeding (we have had a lot of issues with breastfeeding from birth but he is doing well right now....) HELP
Praying this little one sticks!
Re: Soothie Pacifier
fwiw We tried to get my son to use the nuk brand orthodontic paci, and he flat out refuses. He will only use the Soothie. I haven't seen any other pacis with the same shaped nipple. Likewise, he will only use the playtex nipples in the same shape and refuses the orthodontic nipples.
You can talk to your pedi, but you might find yourself wrestling your infant if you try to change his paci shape.

Soothie makes newborn pacifiers and then "Super Soothies" for 3 mos.+. Basically they are just harder and tougher to chew since baby is stronger and teething (if you squeeze the nipple, you can tell the difference).
They sell them at BRU and Target and also online. Lydia only takes Soothies, and since she is over 3 mos, I bought her some of the Super Soothies. She has a hard time with them and still prefers the softer newborn ones, so that's what we give her. I don't think there's anything wrong with it as long as she's not chewing them apart.
I agree with KeepingItLowKey...the "Super Soothies" (3month+) are just harder but I'm not sure it's a necessity to switch from the old ones at exactly at 3 months. My DD never quite took to them, just loved to "chew" on them rather than suck. I pulled out the Nuks I had in desperation (she liked them sometimes at night at first, but I'd given up on them since she would usually spit them out but keep the Soothie) and NOW she greatly prefers the Nuks! Go figure.
Otherwise, at 3 months I would hazard a guess that you have breastfeeding well established (shield or no) so you can probably try a change. BUT, a soothie is still a good option for now.
