Houston Babies

Regular music for baby?

We are bopping this morning to the Killers and Coldplay.  She is loving it.

I think she must already know Blackout by heart.

Since we use an ipod in her room, she certainly gets a variety.

Plus, it is much more enjoyable for me.

Re: Regular music for baby?

  • we only have 3 "baby" CD's..  2 are still in the wrap...  Luca sings along with whatever I play in the car..  I think it's fine..  and it doesn't make mommy crazy!!!

  • On Saturday mornings, we put the Ipod on while we make and eat breakfast.  Esm? loves music and would fall asleep in my arms as I danced her around when she was small.  I grew up with music, so it's important that DD does also.  We listen to a lot of the Putumayo Kids CDs, too.
  • one of Truitt's 1st cds was a 'political activist' cd i made him. lol! it's got U2, bob marley, public enemy, bob dylan and more...

i think music is great for kids- all kinds! tru's current fave is Bill Withers, which thrills me to no end.

  • this kid already responds to music.  I love my oldies and brit - some international music and rhianna.  he will grow up listening to what I listen to until he finds his own likes.  i'm not going to buy that kid 'crap' - to me it's crap, honestly.  another way for 'the man' to take my money.

there is soooo much music out there for kids, geared toward kids, that is not crap at all. you're really missing some great stuff if you think that. any and all of the Putamayo kids world music cds are awesome. they are some "real" songs, some you may even know, and others that are regional and folk music and they are on kids' cds b/c they have things about them (melody, words, voices) that resonate with kids. like it or not, kids respond more to kid voices than they do to adult voices. also, there are several "real" bands that have made cds for kids. my fave are the They Might Be Giants cds, but I also have/love the Johnny Cash Family Album.

i think that adult music is awesome for kids. truitt has been to ACL fest and sees local music here in town. he loves it. last night we went to a powwow and whenever there was a break he would say "more drum please." there is a lot of music out there for kids to experience and playing kids music for them now doesn;t mean they are going to be 36 and still listening to it- unless they are like me and actually enjoy a lot of the music i have bought for my son (at our paryt friday night, i played Reggae playground and New Orleans playground)

i guess what I "hear" kid music as that irritating high pitched child voice that gets under my skin.  maybe kids respond better to kid voices but I feel that he will still get something/an emotion/ a feeling from any music.

i will check out the ones you mentioned though.  thanks for the recomendations.

  • i'm around music all day at work, and the louder and more upbeat it is, the more dd likes it. i guess its because that's what she heard when i was pg. riding in the car with me is always fun for her because dh listens to talk radio.

  • I will never forget the first time Natalie laughed. We were in her room and "Funky Town" by Lipps Inc was on the radio. I was dancing around with her and making her do movements to the music...she thought it was so funny! Now whenever I hear that song, I smile :)

We almost always listen to regular music. She has a couple kids CDs that she likes, but they grate on my nerves after a while.

  • We've never really listened to "kid" CDs.  The only one I can think of is a Baby Einstein Lullaby one, which I only just now started playing for Hannah at sleep times.

It's not that I don't like them.  I just never went that direction.  For us, both kids, but especially Sam, respond the most to upbeat music.  His current favorite songs are I Wanna Be Sedated and Sir Duke.  But unfortunately he also responds to DH's metal music...

  • Avery is a rock kind of girl (with the exception of her most favorite rap song that I have to censor).  We have some kids music, but hardly use it.  She does listen to the Rock-a-bye at bed time.
