Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Baby Shaking Head ?

Do any of your babies shake their head as if they were saying "No" ? I've noticed my 8 1/2 month old son shaking his head over the past few weeks, and it was so pronounced a few nights ago and it seemed to be triggered by music which I found strange that I took him to the pedi thinking it might be a seizure or something.

Here is a video of my son shaking his head:

The pedi said that head bobbing (dropping the chin) is the classic sign of infant seizure, and that this seemed OK although he's never seen a baby shake their head so much as in the video. Then again, he said, no one's brought in a video of it to him before.

Researching this a bit online, I've found people say it could be from an earache (my son does not have an ear ache), to teething (why would it be linked to music then?), to babies just liking the feel of it.

Any thoughts?!

Re: Baby Shaking Head ?

  • OMG!!! Our baby does this too, and it has me so concerned, it's identical to your little boy. Our pedi said to keep of journal of when she does it (which seems to be after nursing sometimes) the nurse said it could be a number of things from- her trying to get fluid out of her ears, but they didn't really have a clear answer for us. Her ears were clear when they examined them and she is happy when she does it, not in pain or anything. So I don't know what to make of it either. I haven't been able to find anything on it either ...

  • DD shakes her head a lot too... from what I have researched they do it because it is a new motion for their head.. something new and different = exciting and something done repeatedly.

Honestly I would not be too worried...

  • YES! My DD just started doing this and she does it all the time! When I sing to her she seems to do it the most. She is probably saying "Mom, please stop making that?horrendous?noise!" LOL.
  • DS does this too.  Pedi says that it is a self-stimulating motion.  Says that his son does it too.  There's nothing to worry about.
  • My DD does this from time to time but now she mimics us. So, if we shake our heads no, she will too.  But she does do this.
  • Thank God! Thank you all SO much for your responses. I am so relieved to hear that your babies do the same, and that your pedis aren't alarmed. Thank you!!!!
  • That's Gracen's newest trick. He just started this week.
  • My son is almost 11 months old and has done the side to side head shaking for several months now.  He has got to the point when we say "crazy head" he will do it.  We noticed he tends to do it when he is tired.  I too was concerned at first.  I teach in an inclusion kindergarten room and my autistic student "self stims" with head motions a lot so of course my thoughts jumped right to tht.  But, now I realize it is just a new motion for him.
  • My son does this too, but I think he is responding in a way. ?If you ask him a question, he shakes his head no. ?Yesterday, one of our male friends was over. ?DS was staring at him like he was a ghost or something. ?

Our friend said "You aren't sure what to think about me, are you?"

DS shook his head "no". ?

    It was funny.?

  • My DS does that when I tell him to say MAMA....actually when I tell him to say anything.
