Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Does your baby only like Soothie pacifiers?

My DS isn't hugely in to his paci, but he likes it a few times a day and it seems like those Soothie ones we have been using are the only ones he likes. We have a bunch of regular pacis we got from my shower and he will suck on them for a minute and then spit them out. I was thinking maybe it is because he doesn't have any teeth yet and those ones are designed for babies that have teeth, but I have seen babies here that use the regular ones. Anyway, not a huge deal but I just wondered if anyone else's baby was the same way.

Re: Does your baby only like Soothie pacifiers?

  • The orthodontic pacis are not designed for babies with teeth, otherwise they would not make them in 0-3 and 3-6 month sizes.

Orthodontic pacifier nipples have a rounded top and a flat bottom, and were designed to prevent tooth troubles later in baby's life. However, if your baby prefers a rounded traditional pacifier nipple, go with what works. Both types of pacifier nipples have been found to increase bite problems, like overbite, later in life, but limiting the amount of time baby spends with the pacifier and taking the pacifier away after baby's first year can minimize dental damage.

Any Paci w/o an angled nipple is better for BF babies as to not mess with their latch which angled nipples have been shown to do.

  • DD only took a paci until 3 months, but only the soothies.  You can get them at Target, and they sell them for 3-6 months too!
  • I also found some Gerber ones that I think are better than the soothes and aren't as ugly.  They cost the same as well.  Check for em at Target
  • C took to the Avent pacis. He had a hard time hanging on to the Soothies... Either way - he isn't much for it...

  • DD refused soothies and every other paci except for the Gerber paci.  It is shaped similar to the soothie, but has a hard plastic disc and ring.  I have to buy them when I can find them as they are not sold everywhere.

  • I have tried other paci's but DS only takes the soothies - he makes faces and spits out every other kind.  I have started getting him to take the 3-6 month ones and it was a challenge at first because they are really hard, but since he's teething, I think he likes the hardness
