Cleaning bottles with bleach????

I just saw a Clorox commercial that said to sanitize your baby's bottles with bleach, 3/4cup per gallon of water.  Anyone do this?  Does this sound right?

Re: Cleaning bottles with bleach????

  • I don't use bleach to sanitize my bottles but I am a Food Inspector and we recommend bleach for simple sanitizing and refer food extablishments to the directions on the label. Bottles would fall under food contact surfaces and 3/4 cup may be a little much but all bleach is not created equal so the label should be accurate. And fwiw a dishwasher will reach a temp to sanitize just as well without any measuring!

I thought so.  It just seems a little extreme when you can just throw everything in the dishwasher.

  • I saw that same commercial... when I worked in a daycare we would use bleach for toys but I am leary of using it for bottles..
  • 3/4 c per gallon seems like a lot to me as well. At the school I teach at we use a 3 step process on all of our toys and tables to kill germs. We use 1 tsp per gallon of water, that is enough to kill germs. For our bottles we just stick them in the dishwasher and call it a day.

  • Bleach is just too harsh for bottles in my opinion.
