Soy Milk?

Has anyone tried soy milk for constipation?  One of my sons is having major constipation with the transition to whole milk.  My pedi suggested soy milk with a stool softener.  We're mixing it with whole milk because he won't drink it plain and I don't want him hooked on vanilla or chocolate soy milk.  Just curious if it helped.

Re: Soy Milk?

  • Be prepared for the poops to start soonafterwards.  We were told, though that babies that age can't process the soy milk and it can be bad on their stomachs.  Unfortunately, my son has a soy intollerance as well and his reaction was really bad foul smelling, runny, poops up to 4-5 times a day.  We did let him have vanilla milk.  It is kinda gross tasteing on it's own.  I have seenit, though.  We prefered to let DS have flavored drink to help him enjoy it more.  He needs rice milk and again, the flavor is ok, IMO w/o but better with the flavor.  We just dealt with DS being constipated and he went about 5 days w/o pooping.  We gave him tons of applesauce and pear juice.  Worked all too well, though since he pooped 4-5 times yesterday to make up for it.
  • DD drinks soy milk b/c she has a dairy allergy, but i haven't noticed a difference in her poops.
  • My ds drinks very vanilla soy milk by silk. It is more fortified than regular soy milk since it is made just for kids, yes it is flavored but it is more fortified even more than regular milk. DD refuses regular milk and now I am weaning her to soy as well. I have heard that cows milk does cause constipation and I have not had any issues with either of my kids and soy.
