Alternative to cereal?

My Abby does not any cereals; rice, oatmeal.  I don't think she likes the texture of it.  She will eat a little peas, sweet pot, bananas, but very little.  Meanwhile Olivia finished her whole bowl of oatmeal and finished Abby's sweet potatoes, about 3/4s of it!!

What else could I give her at breakfast time?

Re: Alternative to cereal?

  • Have you tried the flavored Gerber cereals (banana, apple or mixed fruit).  You're right, it could be the texture, but it's worth the $2.30 to try.  Just an idea.  I hope all is well with you.  I miss reading your blog.  Hopefully one of these days I will be able to catch up!

  • Have you tried mixing something in with it?  We usually mix in applesauce (I buy a HUGE jug of it -- sugar free) and now B&K will only eat oatmeal if it has fruit in it (sometimes we mix in prune juice if they need some poo help, too). Or have you tried to make it a different consistency (i.e. thinner)?  Do you mix it with formula?  Mine will only eat it with formula, too (which is good, now, b/c they need those extra ounces).

We've given our two yogurt as well . . . Yo baby & other "kid" flavored kinds.  It sometimes upsets Kendyll's tummy so we don't do it all the time.

Or you could be like our nanny who somtimes feeds them peas for breakfast -- blech!  Ick!   But I guess it doesn't really matter to them. :)

  • We have even tried to mix it so that is it less than half of cereal and mostly apples or bananas.  We have mixed it with formula, juice, everything!  Nope!

I wonder if we should just take a break for a week or so, but I hate that she is only wanting her bottle and it is "time" for her to eat.

My two will go in spurts where they only want the food not bottles or vice versa. . . I figure as long as they eat something we're cool.  Maybe taking a little "break" will help -- good luck!

They are 6 months- like you said I would try it again, maybe daily for a couple weeks-to remain consistent?  Although I would keep it the same-if once it is mixed with water, then juice, then formula, then thin, then thick.... she can't get familiar with what it is 'supposed' to taste like. Just a thought. If after a couple weeks of the same offering I would move on. The iron in fortified cereal is really important-if you are FF she should be getting enough. If not, maybe your doctor can advise how she could get her iron.

  • My Jenna was an extremely picky eater to start. I would feed them from teh same bowl and she would maybe eat a teaspoon total...while Jared would finish it off. She was just happy chewing on her spoon and would either not open her mouth or spit out anything that came close. ?She wouldn't even eat bananas or applesauce....what baby doesn't like bananas?

    ?

Anyway, I just kept offering it to her before offering her the only thing she did eat (sweet potatoes) and eventually she grew to like other things.

    ?

One thing I did notice is that Miss Independent really doesn't care for baby food overall and would much rather have the table food we're eating so that she can feed herself. ?Have you tried giving the girls puffs or Cheerios yet? Maybe she would like something she could do herself or something she could "chew" ??
